Again, Lizzo classically trained singer and flute player. Missy attended the Berklee College of Music. You sound like an old man "get off my lawn" type.
You do understand that hop hop and rap are not genres older people embrace, right? I find most of it disgustingly lacking in musical talent. Except for Tupac, Tupac was a genuine poet.

I am. They are both God awful by almost any standard of musicality.
So who is your modern day go to? Just curious.
Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Nirvana etc. is about as modern as I get. Except for Americana, there are a ton of great acts out there performing that relatively new genre.
Point me to a new rock band within the last 10 years that's worth a damn. I'm sure there are some, maybe even some I'm aware of but none that come to mind.
In the interest of fairness I decided to give her a listen. I made it through 30 seconds and discovered there's not a dimes worth of difference between her music and every other rap/hip hop artist out there. Yuck.

interesting fact. Over the past 20 years, the reading level at which musicians write music has dropped to a 3rd grade level. So basically, the more you dumb down the music, the more popular you become. So does that mean that music lyrics at a 3rd grade reading level makes it more appealing to the less intelligent majority in this country?

Agree to disagree.
You are obviously not an old effer like me. Hey, we like what we like and that's OK.

Tablature, at least for stringed instruments, probably contributed to that.

According to the feminists men are so sexist when they objectify women's bodies. Now let me post some lyrics to a Missy Elliott song and tell me how this isn't objectifying men.
Is it worth it, let me work it
I put my thing down, flip it and reverse it
(gibberish) If you got a big, let me search it
And find out how hard I gotta work ya
It's not gibberish, it's the prior line run backwards.
Forwards or backwards it's still gibberish.
I agree. I can't stand it.
I found some of the early stuff like Grand Master Flash fun. At least you could understand the words. You can't even tell what the hell they are yammering about other than the F this or F that's. Several of us got so sick of having to listen to this garbage at our gym that we threatened to quit if they did not curtail it. There is nothing about this crap that motivates me in a workout and is simply an annoyance.

WHAT?!?!?! REALLY?!?!??! Had no idea.
Whether something is in your dusted taste zone or not is not my problem. It doesn't discount that these artists are indeed talented (and trained musicians).
I find Missy, Lauryn Hill, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu to all be talented wordsmiths and vocalists. I don't assume you have to feel the same way.

A new interesting debate tho... in that lyrics might be dumbed down but does that mean the music overall is dumbed down? I would think the instrumentals, synthesizations (word?sp?>.<), and complexity of the music scores has held even or become even more complex (classical aside). Maybe tastes in what we listen for within music have altered as well?
That said... I agree. I listen to the lyrics of songs most days and cringe.

At this date...Tedeschi Trucks. There are zero pop artists or rap artists other than the Beastie Boys on any playlist of mine. There really is no mainstream artist today I listen to regularly and I deplore today's mainstream Country music. I find it musically void as that crap we are discussing. Zac Brown and Sturgill Simpson not included in that genre.
There is no denying Im a old fart. No problem admitting it. I cant stand 90% of the music coming out today.

Hip hop is like all other music, it hasn't been good since the mid 90's. There's maybe a couple of artists that break through but overall the entire music industry regardless of genre has been garbage since the mid 90's IMO.
I can’t stand the crap my teenage kids listen to. And my dad couldn’t stand the music I listened to (80’s/90’s). And his dad probably hated the Bob Dylan and 60’s folk he listed to. And so on.

There is some truth to this. I will say however that my daughter(now married) and I now have very similar tastes in music. I like some artists that she likes (Avett Brothers..John Mayer..Zac Brown..ect) and she likes many of my favorites..(Dire Straits..Jackson Browne..Eagles..ect). We actually have very similar playlists. She long ago outgrew the silly pop stuff and engaged actual musically talented artists. We have a real combined love of Bluegrass of all types.
Someone explain to me how this crap almost top the charts...stopped at #3
I will be 60 in Jan and the only music I truly I cant listen to is top 40 pop and rap from the last 10/15 or so years. My go to channels while driving to away football and basketball games and fishing trips...Tom Petty, Classic rewind, Classic vinyl, 70s, and the 90s
