From the article:
Quote:The Atlantic Coast Conference, as many coaches pointed out, has three of the five Hall of Fame coaches still active in college basketball (Mike Krzyzewski, Roy Williams, Jim Boeheim) and the coach of the reigning national champions (Tony Bennett). That's four men with 10 combined national titles. So there's no denying the ACC has the strongest, and most accomplished, coaches at the top. And guys like Jim Larranaga, Mike Brey, Leonard Hamilton, Chris Mack, Jeff Capel and Kevin Keatts, just to name a few, obviously provide plenty of coaching depth -- which is why the ACC is a totally reasonable answer to the question we asked.
But so is the Big 12 and/or the SEC.
Those two conferences combined to get 42% of the vote -- and understandably so considering you can reasonably argue both have a lower percentage of on-the-hot-seat coaches than the ACC in its current form. Do you realize 60 percent of the 10 Big 12 coaches (Chris Beard, Bob Huggins, Lon Kruger, Bill Self, Shaka Smart and Bruce Weber) have made a Final Four at their current school, a former school or both? That's strong. And no league has upgraded its stable of coaches over the past decade more than the SEC -- a conference where six men with Final Four appearances (Rick Barnes, John Calipari, Tom Crean, Ben Howland, Frank Martin, Bruce Pearl) on their resumes now work.
The competition is starting to heat up!

Let’s be honest, who cares who the coaches are if they aren’t winning. It’s been 7 years since The SEC won a championship and longer than that, 12 years, since The Big 12 cut down the nets. If the coaches in those other leagues, SEC & Big 12; were so talented wouldn’t they win more often.

Please use Eric Reveno instead of Josh Pastner for GT. We'll hurt the curve less.

RE: Which Conference Has The Best Group Of Basketball Coaches?
All three conferences have great coaches for sure. The one thing I'd say about the now oft-remarked slate of six SEC coaches with final fours...only three of those made it with their current teams. Four of those six have been fired at previous stops (although to be fair obviously Pearl's wasn't winning related). For the most part, the ACC coaches of note have made their bones at their current school, Chris Mack the biggest exception.
I mean, it's certainly a good baseline no doubt...but do Ben Howland or Tom Crean really strike you as the elite of the elite? Would you slot Frank Martin (one win over .500 over the past two years) ahead of guys like Mack, Hamilton, Larranaga, Brey, because of a fluke final four run? Rick Barnes (and obviously he's a good coach) and Tom Crean (who probably isn't) are 15 years past final four runs. Howland is 12 years past his.
It's just such a fluky stat to come up like it really, really means something. I mean, would the ACC slate be better if FSU fired Hamilton and hired Paul Hewitt? Or if Louisville had hired John Thompson III or Kevin Ollie instead of Chris Mack?
Again, I'm not saying that the SEC coaching isn't strong, or upgraded, but they're really beating their chest about a lot of guys they're catching on the way down.

Paul Hewitt made a Final Four despite never once being able to field a team that could reliably hit free throws or inbound the ball under pressure. You can be such a good recruiter that raw talent overrides everything else. Happened to Hewitt. I'm sure that applies to some of the SEC coaches as well.

I absolutely laughed out loud when I read "Big 12 hands down". Had to be a relative of Paul Finebaum who lives in Big 12 country and is a huge basketball fan.

Isn't that pretty much the SEC strategy in all sports?

By that same logic, ACC football coaching is just as good as SEC football coaching, because they have the same amount of coaches who have won national titles.
Would anybody in the SEC even remotely buy that?

The Big 12 and SEC suck at basketball; always have always will. Both are one team conferences. Take Kansas out of The Big 12 and Kentucky out of The SEC and you have two more CUSA’s.

Admittably, I don’t follow college basketball that closely, but I thought the Big12 was a very solid 10 team league and more than just KU. Texas Tech for example just made it to the finals last season.

...and the S. Carolina Gamecocks made the Final Four in 2017.

TTU did not just luck out, they had a very good season and was a high seeded team. I won’t argue that they are better than the ACC, but the Big12 is easily a top 4 basketball conference.

A Final Four is good for a program like Texas Tech or South Carolina but ACC programs aspire (or should) for championships.

No PAC coaches.
When the PAC expands they will need at least one blue-blood basketball program in the CTZ to help jumpstart basketball on the west coast.
Oklahoma (for football), Oklahoma State, Kansas (for basketball), and Kansas State/Iowa State are the logical choices.

I think that ship has long since sailed. They'd probably have a better shot of adding basketball only members like Gonzaga and St. Mary's or something (which obviously isn't going to happen).
