Yup.
But if he is healthy I have to think he should be a top WAC player.
I think "if healthy" Fisher should be able to score a significant number of points in the WAC. With a surgically repaired knee, he might not have as much leaping ability or quickness; and that might be reflected in his ability to defend speedy guards. If anything, the WAC has a lot of speedy guards... NMSU's AJ Harris, Terrell Brown, UTRGV's Jovan Levi, Seattle's Morgan Means, UVU's Brandon Averette , CBU's Milan Acquaah and Brandon Boyd, etc. etc... Fisher is bigger and stronger, but probably a slower guard than he used to be.
I'm not sure Fisher would be guarding those guys much anyways. I'd have to think Brown/Dixon/Blackshear/Johnson would be on these guys more than Fisher but we won't know till the WAC season starts.
Well, NMSU will probably start Harris, Brown, and Queen on the perimeter. Who exactly can Fisher guard defensively? All three Aggie guards are quick. Seattle U is very similar with Morgan Means, Terrell Brown, and Delante Jones probably starting on the perimeter in Hayford's line up. GCU has a lot more depth at guard as well. But that might mean Fisher gets less playing time in lieu of Isiah Brown or Mikey Dixon; against quicker teams like NMSU and maybe Seattle. BTW, there is a possibility NMSU could get the services of East Carolina transfer Shawn Williams this up coming season. This season, NMSU should have 5'9 AJ Harris, 6'1 Terrell Brown, 6'6 Trevelin Queen, 6'0 Shunn Buchanan, 6'4 Clayton Henry, 6'4 Jabari Rice, 6'6 Dajour Joseph, and 6'1 Shawn Williams in their guard rotation this season.
Don't get me wrong, Jaylen Fisher is a very good addition to their program. And, GCU added a few other good D1 transfers in Isiah Brown and Mikey Dixon as well. So, GCU should be a deeper more versatile team next season. The Lopes will not be as big of a team this season but they will be quicker defensively with Majerle probably a four out, one in line up this season. I see Oscar Frayer, Lorenzo Jenkins, Ethan Spry and possibly Bryce Okpoh playing at power forward this season with Ale Lever and Louis Bangai rotating at center. Too bad Gabe McGlothan is redshirting this season.
I am guessing, but this is what I think GCU's starting line up will be this season...
Point Guard - Jaylen Fisher (6'2, 200-lbs, Sr) - if fully healthy and eligible immediately
Shooting Guard - Carlos Johnson (6'3, 215-lbs, Sr)
Wing Guard/Forward - J.J. Rhymes (6'4, 205-lbs, Jr)
Combo Forward - Oscar Frayer (6'7, 190-lbs, Sr)
Center - Alessandro Lever (6'10, 230-lbs, Jr)
Main bench support...
Point Guard - Isiah Brown (6'2, 175, So)
Shooting Guard - Mikey Dixon (6'2, 170, Jr)
Combo Forward - Lorenzo Jenkins (6'7, 210-lbs, Sr)
Center - Louis Bangai (6'10, 230-lbs, Fr)
I don't necessarily disagree with the lineup, but you may be underestimating how much Majerle will lean on FR PG Javon Blacksher. Everything I've read and heard from Majerle about the PG position is Fisher/Blacksher. Thunder Tan isn't usually high on freshmen, but Blacksher, Fish, & Carlos Johnson have been grinding together since I think mid-July.
To tie in the "Who will defend quick guards?"e's question, he is also coming from one of the top public HS basketball programs in the country that creates dynamic offense through stifling, full-court defense. He will make freshman mistakes, but expect Blacksher to contribute at more at the 1. Because Majerle likes running with 2 PGs on the floor, I also wouldn't be that surprised to see Brown on the floor a bunch with Fisher/Blacksher.
