Ohio State copyright request
So Ohio State University is apparently planning to market apparel based on "The" - based on the weird emphasis they have on the 'The' in their name as "The Ohio State University". As a result they're trying to copyright the word 'The'. See https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nc...006567001/

Of course there's the issue that many other schools use the word 'The' already - if Kent State put out a shirt saying "Beat the Zips", would we need to license 'The' so we wouldn't infringe their copyright?

And I'd also like to point out that apparently OSU ain't so good at English - you'd only use 'The' if there's a population of one; there are a bunch of Ohio state universities, so "An Ohio State University" is more appropriate

If I were Kent State, I would rush to copyright something like "The Ohio state university at Kent" and get that on t-shirts, just to dog their copyright request

Well, I think technically Kent would be better described as "An Ohio State University in Kent". I suppose you could do "The Ohio Public University in Kent".

I always found the "The" thing at OSU to come across as arrogant and have for thirty years since I first found out about it. I'm so glad that OSU has fallen off of my daughter's list of possible colleges.

I think they are trying to copyright it for use in university names, nothing else. It’s a ‘who cares?’ for me.

Actually there was a bit in USA Today - the author poked some fun at TheOSU's over inflated view of themselves and greed - actually they're hoping to sell lots of clothing with THE only on it. I liked OUs response they posted a sign reading The first University in Ohio

Nice! Both of my kids turned down tosu - my daughter even remarked during her official visit that tosu was rather full of itself.

Now, if Ohio University could copyright 'Ohio' for use with marketing college athletics, would that mean An Ohio State University wouldn't be able to use it?

And if Ohio State copyrighted 'The' for use in marketing collegiate athletics, would The Citadel need to stop using 'The' in their name?
