You damn skippy. I attended from 2010 to 2016, and I can tell you, whenever I saw work, it was @ 50% speed. And a lot of laughing with each other.

Computers: $1,500 or Less

What's not tax free?

Food
Condoms
Opioids

Ehhh.... TECHnically (pushes glasses up on nose), if the opioids are a prescription, they are not taxed (at least sales tax anyway). And if they are illicit, neither are they.

They are not asking for a raise. They are using shaming tactics to force a raise. Sorta like extortion? It's real simple. If you provide $15 per hour of worth to the University, you will be paid $15 per hour. If you provide $40 per hour of worth to the University, you will be paid $40 per hour. If you don't like $15, or $10, or $7.50, or whatever you make, either ask for a raise (while deserving it), or find another job.

she recently did a WONDERFUL story...it was picked up by both the DM and CA.
If you read about The Methodist Hospital suing its workers...and poor Memphians into submission...then you read at least parts of her story.
She does great work when she isn't trying to keep the polarizing spectrums of color hanging between us as people.

I picked cotton for 10 cents a pound. Does that count? It wasn't voluntary.

Man, 10 cents a pound would be $10.00 per hundred pounds. That would have been exorbitant pay in my day.

As I recall, we were paid 1.00 to $1.50 per hundred pounds (cwt). That was circa 1953, when I was 9 years old. A really good adult picker could pick 300# a day, earning $3.00 to $4.50 for a day's work. I never did pick more than 100# per day. Cotton chopping earned $3.00 a day. I was glad to turn 10 years old, 'cause then my daddy let me drive a tractor and get out of the cotton patch. That old AC WD tractor looked pretty good in comparison to that tar-bottomed cotton pick sack.

Times have really changed since then. Even those we thought were well-off folks back when I was a kid would have been considered dirt poor by today's standards.

As a college student I worked summers in a machine shop for minimum wage ($1.35 per hour). I was really glad to work a little overtime to make extra cash. Of course you could get a meat and three lunch for 75 cents back then, too.

If you don't have a $125 phone bill and a $200 cable bill have have to purchase the next new sneakers for nike every 6 months you could live on less that $15 per hour.

I just described an engineer that use to work for me. He was not an engineer but a numbers cruncher but making $60k. A good secretary could do his job for half that. He was always asking for a raise because he couldn't afford to pay his bills.

You will be paid as little as possible. That's just economics 101. Now, the workers could all quit, or they can use whatever means they have to try and get raises. It seems to me that the University has the power in this issue. The workers can't "shame" the University if the University isn't doing anything for which it should be ashamed. Let it play out.

How is this story different than the Methodist story...

It is about poor people

RE: Dr Rudd’s Tweet
I've had cases where people making over 100k couldn't pay their taxes/bills, and I've had cases where people making 35k lived comfortably and took care of their families. My (extremely unpopular) opinion is this: we don't have enough poor people in this country. Those that work hard and live within their means end up having the same lives as those unwilling to do anything, consistently make poor choices, and rely on the government for constant support and to raise their kids. Our "poor people" all have cell phones and high speed internet, full kitchens and free education. It's time to let some people fail, while helping the working poor more.

When did it change that an employer was responsible for an employee's living standard? This is a free country. We have more jobs going unfilled than ever. If one employer doesn't offer what you consider a living wage, develop the skills to be worth more & work for with another employer. Whatever happened to personal responsibility?

It would be nice if on Memphis Tiger message board we could actually stick to sports. I do not give a crap what any of you think about anything unrelated to Memphis Tiger athletics.
