-Fickell opposes the notion of a single, defining line separating the haves and have-nots of college football. Cincinnati is one of the few programs outside the Power 5 — along with UCF, USF and Houston — that’s arguably comparable in talent, resources, support and desirable geography.

RE: Is the P6 Narrative starting to produce results in national perception of The AAC
I think you can throw Navy in the mix with those other 4. Sure they may never win the conference but they are a recognized name and play a good yearly OOC schedule against other recognized names and P6 programs.
Temple and Memphis are the next tier down, but would move up to tier 1 with a breakout year if they were to win the conference and have a good showing in a NY6 bowl.
It would seem like it would be in the best interest of the Big12 to form some kind of scheduling alliance with the AAC. They may have to raid the AAC in 5 years if a few key members leave and perception wise it would be better to add P6 teams than G5 teams. Perhaps the AAC can beat them to the punch if they can convince WVU to come back.

Awesome article. I hope ECU can step up to beat more “P6” teams and consistently win again.
Our leadership-, coaches, presidents, all need to read Fickells comments and echo them in the press as much as possible. Why is the value of a TV contract the dividing line and not on field performance? Why is Kentucky football elevated above Cincy? Why is UNC/Wake/Duke above ECU? Because they make more off tv? That’s stupid but it’s what the press has pushed for years.
It’s a joke. The 4 team playoff is exclusionary a really a joke.
Say what you will about the “P6” campaign. It has worked.

Temple has won an American Conference Championship. Over the life of the American we are the most consistent winning program.

Wow, that is interesting and I never even considered that fact. Nice! And I think Temple is going to have a surprisingly good football season in 2019.

East Carolina, which is currently being fixed from terrible administrative decisions by previous stewards that are no longer there, has beaten as many P5 programs as anyone in this conference. To not be in that conversation is ignorance of our football history. That will be rectified real soon!!!!

I think that shows the importance of the NY6 game for perception.
Temple or Memphis getting in one and winning of putting on a show will just further separate the AAC from the G4 in perception.

Your last sentence answered the question: the media drives all of this. This has been particular true for the past 20 years or so. I hold ESPN's College Game Day, College Football Live and segments on Sports Center responsible for all of this. I can remember ESPN calling the Big East the Big Least in 2011 after Pitt and Syracuse announced they were joining the ACC. Mark May then said the schools remaining would never play in a meaningful bowl ever again. It was almost as if it became dictum. The rest of the media has followed suit.
RE: Is the P6 Narrative starting to produce results in national perception of The AAC
Anyone who is not completely brainwashed realizes good football is played in this conference and is very competitive with other P6s. Close your borders (sign a GOR) and quit flirting with the other conferences.

Memphis too had won a conference title, beat UH last 3 yrs. & played UCF for the conference title the last 2 seasons... next tier down?

This article only mentions "top half" of programs vs P5, here we all know what ECU has accomplished and what ECU is capable of.
As you have mentioned, bad administrative decisions has thrown a "Monkey wrench" in the ECU Machine of late, but that is all about to change for ECU with new administration and new coaches.

I have never had a conversation with a fan from another school about how much money their program makes. This is internet message board BS and the press driving a narrative that is a fiction. The fact that BC, Wake, Kentucky, hell UNC, makes more money than AAC programs will never make them power programs, ever. I remember watching the Chic Filet kickoff game between LSU and UNC several years ago and the Georgia Dome had to have been 80% LSU fans. I was ragging my UNC fan buddy about it and he had to fall back on the "we're a basketball school" garbage. Please. Power programs kick ass on the football field, fans of weak ass "P5's" point to their TV contract.

Well, I would say "is working" rather than "has worked."
P6 campaign has always been about 2025 and the next CFP contract and restructure. This media deal was always an intermediate objective rather than an endstate. In that sense, the $$$$$ side worked for the part about separation from the G4, but didn't wildly exceed expectations and catch up with SEC/Big10.
If you want to give the P6 campaign an "F" for not delivering SEC/Big10 bucks (at an early-midpoint of the campaign) are you calling BigXII, PAC12, and ACC failures, too? Or BigEast?
RE: Is the P6 Narrative starting to produce results in national perception of The AAC
Win or at least be competitive in a few major bowls and build up a resume of good OOC wins then Memphis and Temple is right there in tier 1 status. The problem with these 2 teams images is that many people still remember Temple getting kicked out of the Big East for being so bad. Memphis not so long ago was one of the worst teams playing football and is more known for their basketball. Again, build up a resume of splash wins and this perception will change.
USF IMO was grandfathered in from the Big East and has played and had a recent history of playing and beating some decent-good P6 teams.

I've always been in favor of a GOR... I mean, how in the world is this league going to get better if all programs won't sign a GOR.
I also don't mind if our lower level programs get a piece of the pie... It's called looking after everyone in this tight circle.
