Who Is The Biggest Brand in the G5 Right Now
A snapshot to me yields UCF, they are the nouveau Boise St over the last couple seasons.
Cincy and UConn are probably stronger if you look over a longer period of time. Boise is huge in Football but not much else and has faded just a bit. Gonzaga is huge for Basketball but not much else.
USF, ECU, SDSU, Memphis, Houston and Colorado State all have claims. I probably put Memphis and Houston at top of this group.
Thoughts? Who have I forgot?

Agree with you for the most part, but what the hell has Colorado State ever done?

Point taken...they just seem like a decent brand with not a ton of top flight performance if that makes sense?

Ohio whipped SDSU 27-0 in the Frisco Bowl last year so don't forget them.
9 bowls in 10 seasons.

Brand? We’re talking national names not in the P5 here. Hmm, probably Gonzaga and UConn basketball. I think Boise still has some cache to their name.
I can’t say I’ve ever seen anyone ever wear Boise or UCF apparel though.

I have seen Boise and Gonzaga gear down here in Phoenix - but just as likely to be alums than "t-shirt" fans.
But from a Brand standpoint, when a team is playing Boise football, or Gonzaga basketball, it captures the attention of the casual fan far more than playing Portland or San Jose St.

Obviously Army and Navy are huge and BYU is up there too. I’m not sure if any of those really count though. After all, the P5 counts them as P5 games.

I see more Boise gear here than any of the NC schools. It depends where you live.

Yeah...I left the academies off because they are different. BYU is different too with their following and special status in the same vein. They also have the 1984 Natty (which they kinda lucked into).

RE: Who Is The Biggest Brand in the G5 Right Now
UCF is certainly the flavor of the moment but there are certainly brands with staying power--the service academies and BYU that continue to hold a lot of cache.
I see some programs that could really build themselves up with a solid win streak. If schools like Memphis, SDSU and UTSA could capture the hearts of their NFL-less markets they could really be something.

It's B.Y.U.. The have the strongest attendance, the longest run of being at least decent if not outright competitive, their revenue is solid but would be even better with a promotion, and they have some history and 1 natty in the modern era (post Korean War). Army, Navy, and Air Force have a different mission and focus and they simply aren't what they were in the WWII era (AFA wasn't even around then) and haven't been truly prominent since the early 60's when Staubach was winning the Heisman at Navy.

Well Football first...then it is helpful to be good in something else like WBB, Baseball, Hockey, Lacrosse....

Excluding BYU and the Service Academies who are 1, 2, 3 and 4, its Boise St. still.
Then its probably Houston. They had a long, successful history in a power conference. And if you look at rankings and time in the rankings among the non-P5, after BYU and Boise, its pretty close between Houston, Cincinnati and UCF. Nobody else is really close.
UConn is a zero for football, but obviously the biggest brand in basketball with Memphis and Gonzaga following. But football matters more in TV value, so UConn isn't at the top.

RE: Who Is The Biggest Brand in the G5 Right Now
Among casual fans? Boise and now UCF. TCU and Utah were elevated after pretty much being those "it" teams for years. Boise has fallen off a bit recently but the casual fan knows about the smurf turf.
Among administrators and those in college sports? Cincy, UConn, Memphis, UCF, Houston and SD St. These are the group of schools with the best chance to be elevated if the P5 ever open the books again.
This is strictly a football conversation though. In basketball it's a whole different animal as you have many more levels besides just two as in FB. You can have a top level respected program in a also ran conference. Look at Gonzaga and the WCC. The Zags are pretty much looked at like a Big East team stuck on the west coast and if they were anywhere east of Omaha they would be in that conference now. BYU only joined up with the WCC because of the Zags.
The AAC is looked at more favorably in BBall than it is in FB and has programs that have brand name power.
Americas favorite underdog Butler now finds itself in a power conference along with the best member of the A-10 and the top of the MVC. So thats two mid-major conferences whose best team has been lifted up the next level. Then Wichita leaves for the AAC and the mid-major conferences are trying to see who fills that void after 4 programs moved on up.
VCU is still going, no one knows what to make of the MWC these days, and a lot of respectable mid-major conferences have become 1 bid leagues.
That whole ball of yarn should untangle the next few years and just in time for the next round of realignment right before the new Big East TV contract comes up for negotiations. Look for the A-10 to finally lose it's mid-western presence and thats probably a good thing for that league.

Technically, yes. They aren't P5 and they aren't FCS. B.Y.U. is a G5 independent.
