I would say some kind of positive track record with college football would be a good box to check off before granting an interview.

Did our previous AD excel in that area.... seems that there was a lot left to be desired/accomplished.... Memphis needs an Ambassador for the "community" in the "worst" way ASAP.... My opinion is such that football or Memphis the University must focus primarily on this "critical" element to create an "all-around" WINNING solution...... E.P. is that Ambassador that is capable of this task.... as opposed to frequenting C.C.'s partaking in the finest imported cigars and cognacs 05-nono.....Success of Memphis begins and ends with "community"

the community doesn't have any money.

Exactly! You have NO clue 03-shhhh please STFU

In my business career I have probably hired over 600 people for all types of jobs including management. All I can say is....experience, achievement and the ability to do the job are very important factors and although EP was a good basketball player....I really don't see that as a reason to hire him as the AD at this point in the growth of our athletic programs. You have to look at potential candidates first and see what is out there that can be hired and then...hire the best person. Reference checking is also critical to hiring. Just throwing out a name of an inexperienced person is really not where we need to go nor should we feel we need to go there. This job is not for those requiring OJT. It is time to get a proven achiever who can work with Dr. Rudd.

Someone who has at least had a desk in the business office of an athletic department.

Penny had experience in the projected profession that Elliot lacks.

He'd be perfect cause he wouldn't have to do ****. The AD at Memphis needs to raise money and make sure the boosters are happy.

Here is Bowen's bio. Bowen began his career as a high school football coach in Colorado Springs, Colorado. In 1987, he moved to Concord, California to become athletic director at De La Salle High School, a Catholic secondary school.[1] After eight years at De La Salle, Bowen became director of foundations and corporate relations at nearby Saint Mary's College of California in May 1995. At the beginning of 1997, Bowen moved to the Saint Mary's athletic department to become an associate athletic director overseeing budget, sponsorship, and student-athlete affairs. Bowen held that position until April 2000.[2] Briefly in 2000, Bowen was also interim athletic director at Saint Mary's.[3]

From July 2000 to September 2002, Bowen was associate athletic director for fundraising at the University of California, Berkeley.[2]

In 2002, Bowen became director of community affairs in the front office of the NFL's San Francisco 49ers, later becoming the executive director of the 49ers Foundation. After three years with the 49ers, and with the endorsement of the 49ers' former head coach and general manager, Bill Walsh, Bowen accepted the athletic director job at San Jose State University on December 20, 2004, overseeing the San Jose State Spartans intercollegiate sports program for eight years, until 2012. Bowen was credited with the improved performance of the San Jose State Spartans sports teams and for the improvement of the San Jose State athletic facilities.[2]

Please post Perry's bio and let's compare

Please post Perry's bio and let's compare

ELLIOT PERRY
DIRECTOR OF PLAYER SUPPORT
Memphis native Elliot Perry enters his 12th season with the Memphis Grizzlies and fifth in the basketball
operations department as director of player support. In this role, Perry’s responsibilities include but are
not limited to preparing Grizzlies players for life after basketball and advising with respect to community
investment. In addition, Perry has been a limited partner of the Grizzlies’ ownership group since 2005
and this summer was named the organization’s Alternate Governor for the NBA Board of Governors. He
also is entering his 10th season on the team’s radio broadcast as an analyst alongside play-by-play
announcer Eric Hasseltine.
A graduate of Treadwell High School, Perry started every game in his four-year collegiate career (1987-
91) with his hometown Memphis State Tigers and led his team to two NCAA Tournament berths, including a second round
appearance in 1987, before graduating with a degree in marketing. Drafted in the second round (37th overall) of the 1991 NBA
Draft by the Los Angeles Clippers, Perry played 10 seasons in the NBA for seven different teams, including a two-game stint with
the Memphis Grizzlies in his final season (2001-02). Perry, who became known as “Socks” because of his trademark knee-highs,
finished runner-up for the 1995 NBA Most Improved Player Award as a member of the Phoenix Suns.
Perry, a 2009 inductee in the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame, is committed to making a difference in his community. He founded
the SOCKS (Supporting Our Community and KidS) Banquet to provide financial support to those organizations that are making
a difference in the Memphis area as it relates to kids. Perry also is an active member of the Grizzlies Foundation mentoring
programs and serves as Chairman of the Grizzlies Foundation Board. He also is a current board member of the National Civil
Rights Museum and Teach for America.

He could do the job, but would need a experience assistant. But he could do the fundraising, which is most of the job. Honestly, if he wanted to do the grind he would be fine.

But I rather have him on the board of directors at some point. He would do a great job on the board.

The AD at this school will always be a face for the boosters, and the board. It's his job to take the heat when things go wrong. Not sure if I want EP in that role.

An effective AD needs relationships with other ADs to help schedule OOC, especially in FB. He needs to be an idea guy for new approaches to fund raising. Fund raising for sure but that too requires relationships or the ability to build relationships with CEOs & high rollers who provide the big bucks & yes, he needs to be personable, approachable to the avg Joe to build community & he needs to run a tight ship financially or the ability to run athletics will get away from him if too easily influenced by the individual coaches. and even though it is likely years off, he needs P5 friends in high places if we are competing for a move to P5.
