The Realignment Mock Draft
The Rules:
- Conferences pick in reverse order of last year's conference Sagarin ratings
- Conferences first declare 5 teams protected. Those teams are the initial 5 that the conference starts with. All non-protected teams then become "free agents."
- Conferences use the 7 rounds of the draft to accumulate 12 teams total. If for any reason a conference has less than 12 teams at the conclusion of the 7 rounds, they are granted as many immediate compensatory draft picks as is necessary to reach 12.
- Conferences can pick a "free agent" team of peer status or lower (P5 -> G5 -> FCS). This means the SoCon can't pick Coastal Carolina and the Sun Belt can't pick Alabama and so on.
- Conferences can negotiate trades for both teams and picks or a combination of the two though I as commissioner must agree to them to make sure we have no shenanigans going on to empty out conferences
- To make sure the game keeps moving, GMs will have 24 hours to make a pick or the commissioner will choose on their behalf. If the GM is unavailable for 24+ hrs due to work/family/actual things of importance, they can send in their picks in advance and/or have a surrogate they publicly appoint in their stead while they're away. In general we want you to pick ASAP as a courtesy. I'm also willing to accept out of order draft picks between divisions (FCS/G5/P5) if the pick being submitted is from the team in that division with the next pick. The official draft clock is only on the one current pick though.

At the conclusion of 7 rounds, conferences will be re-evaluated and graded overall and on whether or not they improved using the following criteria:
- Ability to generate revenue
- Ability to compete in revenue sports for championships
- Ability to compete in non-revenue sports for championships
- Geographic footprint and cohesiveness
- Cultural cohesiveness
- Academic strength

Conferences have until Wednesday Noon ET to elect a General Manager to be in charge of communicating picks on the appropriate thread as well as coordinating strategy with fans of their conference as it is built.

I'll entertain wildcard entries like FCS and defunct (WAC/SWC/Metro) if I think there's enough raw material (schools) of relevance that can be handed to you to start with.

If at any time a General Manager is compromised by rooting for a team that has changed affiliation they can no longer serve as GM for that conference due to conflict of interest and the fans of the current teams must select a new GM.

You can't make everybody happy because it's a restriction and you'll never get unanimous agreement on any restriction, but I also don't want a runaway slop scenario where with the first pick in the draft C-USA selects Alabama either. You want the final configurations to at least be semi-plausible I'd think. (And Alabama in the AAC is also one of those things that would break suspension of disbelief.) I think you'll find in the AAC the name of the game will be playing into the P5, since it is home of the tastiest teams to expand with within the G5.

So when the Big 10’s first move is to kick Rutgers and no G4 conference wants them do they drop to FCS?

No, they schedule Liberty and NMSU for a home-and-home each year in football to fill half their schedule, then take paycheck murder games at the beginning and end of the season. 05-stirthepot 03-lmfao

If you're a fan of a team in the MWC or Pac-12 this is probably the thread you want to get organized in as both those boards are dead here.

Give me the Big East basketball FCS schools and Army/BYU or whoever I can have and I’ll remake the Big East if I can play on the P5 tier.

would old conferences that been around before 1940s count? RMAC was like a power conference in the old days with Colorado and Colorado State. MVC and Southern are another 2 that had P5 programs in them at one time as well.

RE: The Realignment Mock Draft
Things that would instantly improve this:

1. Make the tiers like this.

1. P5
2. AAC/MWC
3. CUSA/MAC/SB

-Just as likely to see the Sun Belt steal Cincy/UConn/Boise State/Air Force/Navy as the AAC is likely to steal Bama/OSU/Mich/Clemson. The AAC just loses all their teams immediately round 1 otherwise.

2. Each conference starts with 12 schools and can’t go past 12 schools.

-The Power conference’s just going to 16 ruins this. Keeping it at 12 makes it important to weigh whether dumping one team for another is really in your best interest. Plus it adds teams like Rutgers, Maryland, Pitt, Syracuse, Missouri to the scrap heap to start and makes G5 conferences more interesting. 12 is the max size for a cohesive conference anyway, plus it’s for fun.

3. Let conferences drop 1 and add 1 per turn.

-Speed it up a little if there’s only 7 turns.

Whichever conference doesn’t have a rep should go to DavidSt. DavidSt = instant unpredictability/ratings.

Maybe limit a conference to losing two teams per round? Kind of how teams cap their losses in expansion drafts?

1) The AAC and MWC largely don't compete against each other in the same place. I'm not sure this solves anything, and may just create a nice NERF zone for the AAC and MWC to slowly acquire what they want of the rest of the G5. And I don't agree that the "G4" are just going to all go and raid the AAC. The MAC's interest in the AAC probably starts and ends at Cincinnati. Besides, look at it as a compliment. The SEC is obviously going to have some raiding happen, especially since they pick last. But they pick last BECAUSE they're already the best. If you're being raided heavily it means you're the dominant force in your area. It's a compliment, and it's inevitable. The Patriots still manage despite picking 31/32 an awful lot.

2) Inter-raiding within the P5 will put a stop to that.

3) Trades make this unnecessary. The NFL Draft has 7 rounds, so do we.

This seems more reasonable, and I could go with that if there's a consensus.
