RE: 2019 Orlando Sentinel Countdown
I've seen accusations that Sun Belt fans, particularly Georgia Southern and App State fans, believe we're somehow someday going to become members of a Power 5 conference.
I have yet to see anyone actually suggest their school has such a future. Am I missing something? I think we're all aware that we're G5 and the most we could hope for, long-term, is the AAC, and even then the odds are stacked against all of us.
I'm okay with that. I just want to see Appalachian be the best it can be where it is. I think there is an opportunity (not a likelihood, but an opportunity) to go 11-1 and win the Sun Belt this year, and to possibly challenge for a New Year's Six bowl. That's the "ultimate" goal for App State football. Our ceiling is to be the next Boise State, who, by the way, is still in a G5 league, too, even after winning like 16 BCS bowls.

App State's next hardest game of the year after @South Carolina. I anticipate a win vs. UNC and I expect wins vs. the rest of the schedule. @Troy will be tough.

If the top schools in AAC go to the Big12 as predicted, why would any school want to go the AAC? It would not be better than the Sunbelt or CUSA.

Why?
Money. The AAC draws more eyeballs, even if you take out, say, Houston, UCF, and Cincinnati.

Could agree more BUT you never know what will happen over a few years (I think Contracts run they 2025- not that long). Not that long ago CUSA was a move up and now look at those guys. So when the big boys leave (if) the AAC those eyes may not be on their league. As I have said before, there is NO. Conference that has moved the needle more than the SBC (granted the needle was pretty low). However, not sure if the SBC ceiling has been reached yet. Pretty sure CUSA and MAC have. So not only is it likely SBC folks not going anywhere but we are not on a bad trajectory.

I agree Buzz! Happy to be in the belt for the foreseeable future. As long as App continues to have success scheduling regional opponents outside of conference, I am good to go!

I wouldn't think the money will be there. I think ESPN will reduce their contract being they likely have clauses about if they lose their better brand schools.

I share your thoughts. UNC should be a win but not USC.

Lets pump them brakes on what Troy and APP will do until we see our staffs actually coach a few games.

RE: 2019 Orlando Sentinel Countdown
10 Coaching transitions for GS since 1981 in the modern era. 10 head coaches in 37 years. Change every 3.7 years on average.
Erk Russell takes up 9 of those years leaving the remaining 28 to 9 coaches giving the average coach 3.1 years at GS.
2 world beaters
2 with solid performance
3 under performed
2 complete and total and utter fails
CCL needs another year.
The only one that completely knocked the cover off the ball in the first year was fired two years later. FWIW

I tend to lean to with this train of thought myself. Potential is there for both, But too many question marks.

I've followed GS through 7 head coaching changes both from coaches being fired and taking a higher-paying job.
If I could sum the lessons learned from all that it would go like this: Things are almost always not as good or as bad as they seem. Your roster is not as awesome or as barren as you think it is.

But also, the wrong coach can drive you straight into the ground.

Agreed. The one thing the Sun Belt could do that would expedite it’s growth and get us closer to that “ceiling” you’re talking about is to bring in 2 more schools. I know, smaller piece of the CFP pie, but could really elevate the conferences perception and make up for the loss in media deals. Would need to bring in top half of the conference teams from the MAC or CUSA though.

I really can't see any MAC team leaving but Marshall, So Miss and ODU fans seem to be really unhappy in CUSA. Maybe if that keeps up and we keep winning they would be interested in a move one day.
