We all take pay check games and while I would never want Western to play Kentucky 5 games with no return game. That's good money for a trip 65 (95 to 120 with traffic) minutes up the road. The going rate for a Bama or AUB is 1.9 to 2 million a game...after travel cost for a team in TN, KY or Miss it would be about what UTSA is getting.

It kind of looks bad when you first see it but in the end...we all do the play for cash.

Yep, Schools with 80k seat stadiums are trying to accumulate 8 home games every year. They usually lose money scheduling OOC road games. Sure, they can outpay anyone for their coaches, and pamper their players with indoor practice facilities, but they can still only give 85 scholarships. Upsets DO happen.

You're right. Not sure why I thought they were all at home.

RE: UTSA, Texas announce five-game series beginning in 2022
Some posters have mentioned their home-and-homes and P5 opponents at home.

UTSA:

2018 - 3 P5s, Baylor at home
2017 - 1 P5 (shortened season)
2016 - 2 P5s, Arizona State at home
2015 - 3 P5s, Kansas State at home
2014 - 2 P5s, Arizona at home
2013 - 2 P5s, Oklahoma State at home
2012 - FCS transitional
2011 - FCS transitional

Every season of our FBS existence except the hurricane-shortened one, we've played a P5 at home. Or if you prefer, 5 of the last 6 years. I looked up your schedules and none of the rest of you can say that. 05-stirthepot

RE: UTSA, Texas announce five-game series beginning in 2022
UTSA for the 2016 football season had $1.95 million revenue on tickets sales. That season, they averaged 23,038. For 2017, 22,821 (5 games) and for 2018 24,710 so based on those average attendance number, I'll hypothesize each season had the same monetary amount of ticket revenue.

Now here is Texas offering for 5 games at an average of 1.7 million. UTSA is making as much for 1 game in Austin than 6 games in a season at the Alamodome. Even at 1 million, it's a little over half of what UTSA makes in one season and in either scenario it still leaves an open home date to fill.

It would have been nice to have Texas in the Alamodome but it more likely would not have been the revenue windfall as compared to what Texas is offering to play in Austin.

If memory serves we have been playing FBS for about 20 years and I think we've been invited to play our own UT two times (maybe 3?) And, we have no future games scheduled with the Land Grant #%^&*@ monsters in our state. Let me guess how you accomplished this feat. Do you have an AD and or President with a pulse and a little bit of negotiating skill? Does your state legislature recognize UTSA to be a legitimate FBS university? Do the people of your home city go out of their way to support your efforts? I'm betting you've got us on all three counts.

Maybe that is because Tenn keeps offering you guys a 5 game series, all in Knoxville, and MTSU does the smart thing and says 'no way'.

If MissSt offered that to USM, our admin would get up from the table laughing and walk out of the room.

UTEP got a five series in Austin too.

Texas will play its UT little brothers in alternating years. UTEP in odd years and UTSA in even years.

Saw that. I would have liked home games for both of our programs, but I think it's a net win.

Can't wait for the UT Austin t-shirt fan comments about not being able to tell which one of us they're playing.

If DeLoss Dodd was still the AD, we would’ve got at least one home game but it looks like Texas is now paying for money games with no return games. Even Wyoming got a 2-1 deal a few years ago which would be unthinkable now.

1 home game vs Texas would bring in 4.3 million dollars if not more. That 4.5 is at $60 a ticket. Texas made $72,457,216 on tickets sold in 2017. That's all sports but football would probably make up 3/4 of that. So $60 a ticket on average is low very low. Western is charging $45 to $65 for Louisville.

Texas fans would pack the alamodome with 72,000...parking and concessions would push it well over 5 million. Move the avg ticket to $75 and you are at 5.4 on tickets sold

btw top sec schools are paying right at 2 million for buy games with Western and S. Miss...maybe everyone but those were reported on

Very good points. Another added factor would be that having Texas at home allows UTSA to increase season ticket prices for that season. It also results in a jump of season ticket sales having Texas on the schedule.

I remember when Texas agreed to come to El Paso. Season ticket prices increased and more sold. People bought them in anticipation of the Texas game selling out and not wanting to be left out.

Tough power conference opponents look good on a schedule, especially to recruits. It's also a good opportunity to see your team play a big school on the road in an exciting venue. The injuries can be hard to overcome, but these games mostly benefit us.

How to tell:
If the other team has more points than you...
... you might be playing the Road Runners

I’m pretty sure this is planned out big time.

Play UT & make nearly 2m a game. Then play another team that pays us to play for 5 years 3 away; 3-4 at home and 1-2 here, making another 3-4m Then play incarnate word( win) and play like a historically bad college team. Maybe Kansas or some other bad team. So we make 4+ million and finish 2-2 in non con. Meaning we need to just win 4 out of 8 games to be in a bowl which is close to a million. Do that for 5-7 years we will have a ton of $. Our team needs different uniforms, practice facility I can’t list all upgrades but it’s a lot in a city with 3 million and the play their game right downtown across from a awesome hangout the pearl. We have awful advertising, but I think our new AD has a good plan. So in 5-8 years we will be good.
