Yes, they do. Have you ever heard of a coaching tree? What about the Butler way? How many coaches has VCU gone through in the last 2 decades with the same success? Why do they all "move up" to other schools with apparent advantages and fall on their faces? Strong coaching is great, but only really matters when the other stuff takes care of itself.

Ive noticed Butler is nowhere near as good without Stevens.

Our conference combined with lack of commitment of resources to basketball will ensure that. I don't see the doom and gloom, but I don't see a program on the rise either. I see a team fighting for a 13/14 seed as a perennial top 4 team in a poor conference.

Last year, ODU has the second-highest basketball budget in CUSA and was spending more than, among other schools, St. Mary's, Nevada and George Mason. Short of disbanding the football program and giving basketball all its money, what should ODU be doing?

(Also, the highest basketball in CUSA is UTEP's. Should we be more like UTEP?)

ODU won 20+ games last year. Earned a berth to the NCAA Tournament. In its 40+ years in Division 1 the best the Monarchs have ever done is win one game in the tournament before losing. By all accounts, ODU's last season was on par with its best years. It isn't as though we were going to the Elite Eight on a regular basis way back when. It is admirable to 'Aim High' but we are who we are.

This is absolutely true.

However, I hope we are not ever satisfied with who we are.

One and done every six years is not what I call acceptable. I can't argue with the objective facts. We had a very good year in terms of wins and losses. At the same time I watched what I felt was a very flawed team beat a lot of very mediocre competition. The program simply does not have the excitement and energy of the past. Just my opinion. If we had a few true rivalries in CUSA where the outcome of the game was important, I'd feel a greater sense of satisfaction. We don't though and all the wins simply taste like cotton candy: sweet but absolutely no substance.

All 3 Western Kentucky games were very intense. Could be a nice rivalry brewing.

This wasnt our best team under Jones but we won when it mattered. The croticism has been lack of tourney appearances and when they barometer is met, the team wasnt pretty enough?

Nobody is calling for Jones's firing right now so I think the barometer was met. Now let's do it with better teams and be more consistent.

Agree with this...JJ has ticked off every box, and yes I have been on the JJ bandwagon since he was hired, and yes I have been frustrated with the outcomes, to date, like everyone else. However, every year our recruiting has gotten a little better. If this continues, regular appearances at the NCAAC Tournament should be expected.

RE: Jones gets a two year extension
Hopefully, now that the question of his being around has been publicly answered, the negative recruiting will cease. From what I've heard, there were 3 or 4 kids we were really hot on, and vice-versa, who ran away when recruiters from other schools began telling them JJ wouldn't be coaching much longer, or whatever they said. Surprisingly, at least to me, none of them were affiliated with Virginia schools.
But I don't know which kids or what schools.

Maybe that's what Jones was talking to the UAB coach about. Hard to imagine that blowup was really just about handshake etiquette.

RE: Jones gets a two year extension
Jeff Jones can coach. He is not sexy, nor is his style of basketball. He wins. We have been in the top 3 in the conference each of the last 5 years. We have gone to the NCAA tourney and been less than a minute away from going to another. Please do some research and see how rare this sustained success is for mid-majors. You can count on 2 hands the mid-major teams that have enjoyed this type of run (especially in today's transfer heavy environment). There are really only a handful of teams playing for a NC anyway. We should always want more, but don't be foolish and believe that we are more deserving of success than any other program out there. GO ODU.

Also...think about this: VCU charters to EVERY away game that requires air travel. ODU chartered to 2 maybe 3 games last year. So we need another $800k/year to make this happen VCU probably spends about $1.5M more on basketball than we do. That is a huge advantage when it comes to recruiting. Also their Asst. Coaches make more than ours. We need to up the Salaries of our assistants as well. Now is the time to really think about giving more $ to basketball so our upward trend can continue.

How in the world can VCU afford that kind of salary?! Seriously, I'm not sure how we can expect to keep competitive when we are literally paying our coaching staff half of what our arch-rival is. Do they have more rich donors? Are they just breaking the rules I don't get it.

They also get more NCAA units than we do because of the conference. Just one extra revenue source.

This is what top mid majors are paying coaches. It is a matter of prioritizing money, and its not just football.

RE: Jones gets a two year extension
From what we've read in the past, ODU football was actually making a little money, so at worst it is about a break even venture. If thats the case, we cant say football is taking any money from basketball since it's self sufficient. So yeah, they're in a slightly better hoops conference, but how much can an extra NCAA credit bring in? Maybe a couple 100k per school? Yet somehow VCU has found a way to pay their coach nearly $1million MORE than ours while they are paying for a crazy nice practice facility. That doesnt sit well with me.
