They probably should have gone with Kevin Stallings, but I suppose this will have to do.

RE: Cincinnati's next basketball coach?
Recruiting was my main concern with Brannen, but someone posted the below on what he did at Alabama and VCU, and it’s pretty positive.

This is exactly the kind of players UC should target. a couple Top 100 players per year could really elevate our seasons forward.

RE: Cincinnati's next basketball coach?
Everyone talks about his time with Grant, but his style of offensive scheme and players he goes after sure look a lot more like he took his style from time with Billy Donovan at Marshall.

Cincy should be recruiting multiple Top 75 - Top 100 guys every year. Will be interesting to see what Brannen can do.

Solid hire for Cincy. So glad y'all dodged Frank Martin
The AAC needs Cincy to be good and Martin is anything but.

You is ridiculous. Martin has an Elite 8 at Kansas State and a Final 4 at South Carolina. He is a good coach.

How is Frank doing since he stopped dropping bags for players?

It will sure be interesting to see if Wichita can avoid losing to him 3 times in one year.

I think there are better coaches out there to be had. I think is a mistake to hire a coach based on recruiting. Those are the ones you want as assistants. The coaches you want are the ones with a proven system that fits your programs identity.

I think Mick needed better assistants. I don’t know what the budget is for assistant coaches at Cinci but it is often over looked at struggling/stagnant. programs with a good coach. I know when Marshall has negotiated contracts in the past he has always negotiated a bigger budget to pay assistants and it shows. It has become easier to get and retain top level assistants that go on to be head coaches.

Brannan could end up being a knock out because of who he surrounds himself with. I hope he gets a Tad Boyle/Chris Jans type assistant. Mark Turgeon is still riding on the success he had and the reputation he built with Tad as an AHC.

This is the crux of my issues with Memphis’ program. Penny is obviously the lead recruiter and Miller is the coach. As soon as Miller leaves, and he will in a couple years, Penny will need to find a head coach caliber assistant to sit in his shadow and do the grunt work. Its just not a sustainable way to build a program.

As with all hires time will tell all, and because Cinci is a pillar of this conference I hope he has a good defensive system.

former NBA Coach of the Year (2007) Sam Mitchell, who led the Raptors to back-to-back NBA Playoffs, does FAR more coaching than Mike Miller...Miller is 'the recruiter'

hiring Sam Mitchell was a VERY smart move by Penny

He's barely over .500 and has made the tournament once in seven years at USC. One NIT appearance, so five years with no postseason. A Final Four run is hard to discount, but it looks like a real weird outlier.

Yes it was, but it makes my point even more applicable. How long are these assistants going to be there? 3-5 years? What happens when they leave? How much long term success will Penny be able to provide?
