Gene Bartow Memorial Forum Name Change
Can we please change the name of this forum to the "Bitching About UAB Forum", and then create a new forum for more positive threads called the "Gene Bartow Memorial Forum"? Reading Blazertalk over the past year has turned into a cesspool of disdain, ignorance, attacks and overall negativity that UAB doesn't need. Coaches read these threads, players read these threads, recruits and their parents read these threads. There can be accountability, there can be a place for negative comments when accurate and done well, but this is slowly turning into a unrealistic, uneducated board that is giving UAB fans a very bad name.

Gene would be very pissed to have his name and memory tied to the content of that current forum.

RE: Gene Bartow Memorial Forum Name Change
In the movie "Paint Your Wagon", the location of the film's events took place in "No Name City" which was physically undermined and destroyed by greed. Perhaps we could erect a "No Name Forum" for those who need such a neutral place to post perhaps with the same result.

The fact remains that several posters are very concerned by what they see as the downward projection of the UAB men's basketball program. Who can say they are not entitled to state their concerns? UAB not only wound up in a third level tournament, but lost its first game there -- and looked bad doing it.

I never stated no one could state their concern, but the way they are stating it is the issue. I am all for accountability, and there will be negative posts in any forum, but the level of these post is the issue.

RE: Gene Bartow Memorial Forum Name Change
I think it's a lot less negative now than it was during the darker parts of McGee & Callaway.

The core issue with UAB Athletics and its relationship with its fans is that there is no trust between the UAB leadership and its fans. In no just world would Ingram and Watts have survived UAB football coming back. They conspired to kill it, and yet were allowed to oversee it when it was brought back. Any decision they make, good or bad is going to be seen through that lens.

It's an environment that breeds polarization in a fan base. That said, most everyone that posts here does so because they deeply care about UAB athletics. I think a place that exists to provide a forum for UAB sports fans to chat about, cheer for and voice concern over all things UAB athletics could not have a more perfect name than to be named in honor of Gene Bartow.

What cause my reaction is all the Ehsan talk, and then seeing a tweet from someone on the UAB basketball staff showing a screen shot of comments from this board that were just over the top and claiming that is our fan base. That is what I don't think Gene would have appreciated.

RE: Gene Bartow Memorial Forum Name Change
I think Gene would be more displeased to know what’s become of his program rather than what’s being said on a message board named after him. Also, a coaching staff that knew they were doing good things wouldn’t spend time going through message boards looking to defend themselves.

We have this unspoken rule about hushing up in hopes that we don’t give a bad look to Gene’s program or his name but fail to realize more than a decade has passed. It’s taken this long for folks to literally lose their shi* over this program. That’s done much more damage than anybody voicing displeasure can do. Again, look within and stop blaming the fans. We don’t even announce the Bartow classics until 3 days before the game is to be played.

You know how much season ticket holders/fans mean to this program, so much that they’ll reward you with games vs D2 and swac teams that are of no benefit to our program.

Or fan base is more and more represented by empty green seats.

I hope and pray that a more entertaining, far more fundamentally sound brand of basketball will bring those fans back.

I fear that what we are seeing is a death spiral for UAB basketball of the type all too many once nationally relevant basketball programs have gone through and few have recovered from.

What I know for a stone cold fact is that anyone with actual agency over the quality of UAB basketball needs to spend far, far less time looking at a message board and far more time improving the product that is put on the court.

I cringe at the exaggerations sometimes but we don't stop it. You don't have to make something worse or better than it actually is or a situation. It just makes the poster look foolish. Just make a point. We want to encourage open discussion for all fans. Everyone is here because they love UAB and only wants what is best for the program. The only issues I have is when someone gets shouted down because they have a differing opinion. We cannot see it all. If it happens point it out and it will be dealt with. Too many times I get a message that something happened and I ask them did they report it and 99% of the time it is no.

Was that a coach jaymay2525? I saw two screen shots from fans not coaches. Even if it was I know someone may send you a screen shot and then you comment on it an the next thing you know you are accused of trolling a board. Has happened to me.

Just because you want a new coach doesn't mean you do not love the program any more than someone that's tired of the negativity not wanting what is best for the program. Getting it off your chest is a good thing IMHO as long as it is not overboard. I have said my peace about it all and that's why I don't go on and on about it because it does no good and is a waste of my time.

Agree 100%.

I know Coach Bartow would be proud of this board and how it has kept fans connected through some really dark times. He'd be honored to have his name at the top.

We'll get through this too. I mean, Watts can't live forever, right?

While I agree that the overall sentiment is far less negative now, I also agree that the board is far more difficult to read now.

Even positive threads quickly get derailed into a topic that irrelevant to the majority of readers here.

We're all slowly succumbing to the psychological mind games of BamaNBlazerFan.

When his nefarious plan finally comes together, this will be BamaNBlazerTalk.

Blaming Eshan is the lazy way of thinking....if we were a better free throw team, Makhtar was taller, Perry' s shot counted and Zack"s arm was like Johnston, we aren't having this conversation.

Message board fans are engaged fans. What the athletic department staff needs to be concerned with are the thousands of fans who have disconnected themselves from the program. I have purchased 4 season tickets for the last 12 years, if we have a schedule like this year, I won’t be renewing. I’m not just talking home games, we need a non conference schedule that if you had success would have you in the conversation for an at large. Play fewer SWAC/D2 schools and go on the road if you must. That’s what they need to be concerned about.

I have grown to like BBF. He does like to stir people up with the Bama references but he is a good Blazer fan. He also will tell it like it is and is a pretty objective guy.

Plus it was a subtle Primus reference. BBF is BT's Harold of the Rocks. I'm not always sure what he's talking about but somehow I always read it anyway.
