if he is getting back like he was- that'd be huge for the nats pen. They dont need the pen to be great- just functional with how the rotation is.
Also, he's a guy that if he is good, and the Nats fell out of things- he's an expiring contract in essence(he does have a mutual option which isn't happening most likely).
They're 8.5 out of the division and 7 back of the 2nd WC. The only things this might have a bearing on is the trade market for RP.
and they have 7 head to head with those leaders next week. Just stop saying they're out of it, because they aren't by any stretch of the imagination. Plus after those series, they have 2 weeks of absolute cupcakes- while the Braves have Cubs/Mets/Phillies and Phillies have Mets/Braves/Mets prior to the break(plus they play each other this weekend- and Braves have Mets early next week). Things could get very interesting by the break if the Nats can get a hot streak here.

He's faced 6 batters and allowed 1 walk(promptly erased by a dp). Last night he threw a 14 pitch/12 strike 1-2-3 inning. He had 4 swinging strikes(after having 7 in the first 8 appearances all season long). Hopefully it's a situation similar to what the Nats were able to do with Greg Holland last year after getting him from the Cards.

Over the past several years the Nats have got to be the biggest underachievers in MLB, and possibly all major sports

Is it me or did you bury the Rockies far earlier and with a far smaller gap? I'm really just following your lead here. Any other team and I have to think you'd be giving us one of those famous stever schedule posts where you show just how difficult it is for the trailing team to claw its way back into it.
Also, you say the Nats would not be screwed without Rendon. I'm sorry, but any team would be screwed if it lost a top 10 (possibly top 5) player without replacing him.
Rockies were leading 11-5 going into the 9th, they blew the lead letting SD tie in the 9th then finished losing it in the 12th. Certainly worst loss of the year. Until tonight the bullpen was 3rd in NL ERA. This fiasco is still going on, but I am too disgusted to watch the end.

Just a killer, considering how well they were playing. As for the Padres, as stever would say, this is the kind of victory that starts a winning streak. I'm hoping for that, as I'd like to keep Kirby Yates off the market.
Yankers trade for HR leader Encarnacion. Rich gettin' richer. Stanton back Tues against Rays...Judge also back soon.
Braves come back from 5 down yesterday to beat Phils in b9th. Great job. Today Newcomb got hit in back of head with return liner and had to leave. Braves were up 5-4 into top 9th, gave up 2 (Jackson, not Swarzak, who has pitched well for Braves so far) and lost it 5-6. Still, a split so far with rubber game tomorrow means Braves will weather this short series either 1 1/2 games up or just 1/2 game up going into Metz. And you're probably tired of hearing it, but Austin Riley with yet another homer tonight. he's tied with Josh Donaldson in HR and RBIs only because former MVP Donaldson drove in 3 today to catch Riley, who's been up in majors for only around a month now.
I understand Stever's hyped because he's a Nuts fan. That bears watching

Rocks righted the ship tonight as Chad Bettis and Brian Shaw tossed 3 scoreless to GWU the win tonight, another loss could have started a bad trend.
Rumor is the Twins are starting to gear up for a run at Bumgarner. Makes sense. If it does happen, it would make for a very interesting postseason. Yankees, Twins, Astros and possible the Red Sox, would make for a hell of an AL side of the postseason. Too bad the NL will be a joke.

Do not forget Tampa Bay, they are well ahead in the wild card race.
Braves trying to run away with the NL East. Get a break in rainout last night for Nats/Phillies- so with makeup DH on Wednesday now, Nats will have a day(Saturday I think) where they'll have to go with a starter outside the normal 5 that they've been using....

13-3 for the Braves so far this month.
And I have to believe the Braves are not done upgrading. Specifically the pen.
Man, Rendon is such a monster. 3.1 fWAR in only 57 games. From 2016-Present, he's 5th in MLB. One of my favorite players, mostly because he's so incredibly underrated. Or at least under-talked about.

What Rendon has done this year is really upgrade at the plate... His career high going into this year- 25 homers. He sits today at 16 homers already. 9th best AB per HR right now. His prior best OPS+ was 139. Right now, he sits at 170. Similarly- best wRC+ going into this year 141- this year 169.
And maybe the amazing stat.... hard hit %. Last year he was at 37.8%. This year, it's at 51.7%.

I realize he's not as old as Scherzer, but like the latter, he seems to be getting better.

I'll disagree in that I don't think the Dodgers are or will be anything close to a joke. The Cubs, Phils, and probably even the Braves are and will be formidable opponents with healthy lineups. Now the Giants, we can laugh at them right now if you want.

Braves really need some help with the 'pen, like most teams, although as you noted, they improved to 13-3 in June, best in the majors this month. Enjoying the recent poundings, which shows how potent Atlanta's lineup can be when its going well. Not any glaringly weak hitters in there right now.
Atlanta, which scored 15 runs in their rubber game match against Philadelphia, has plated 90 runs in winning 10 of its last 11 -- the best run the Atlanta offense has had over 11 games since 2006. Last night against the Metz, Ronald Acuna Jr., the 2018 NL Rookie of the Year, hit his 17th homer, the 11th of his career to begin a game and the 22nd to begin an inning. My favorite quote after the game: "We just stunk," New York manager Mickey Callaway said. "Again, we weren't good." Kinda nice when you don't get the typical coachspeak. At least he's honest about how he feels.
Braves starter Mike Soroka's (8-1) threw just 68 pitches in six innings, but his winning streak is the longest in the majors by a pitcher under 22 since Dontrelle Willis won the same number for the 2003 Florida Marlins (with some help from the umpires, as I recall), but Soroka has given up eight earned runs over his last two starts, the same total he allowed over his previous eight outings from April 29-June 7. His ERA rose 20 points to 2.12. So he's actually getting worse.
Wonder if/when Dallas Keuchel will make a difference for the Braves? He's currently in line to make his Atlanta debut Friday at Washington. For a refresher, Keuchel went 12-11 with a 3.74 ERA in 34 starts last season for Houston. Go Bravos, stay on fire! Chop, Chop, Chop! (yeah, that'll probably jinx them but what the hey)

I honestly don't see how any of those teams have a chance against the Dodgers. Obviously, I mean on paper. Anything can happen in the postseason.

The Rockies can make you a sweet deal for Wade Davis.
