To put that in perspective on what the coaches expected out of Marshall, well UTSA was the 8th seed in the tournament and UTSA was 21-31 (8-16).

When Stanton left to take over Indiana I got extremely worried about our softball program. And I had a right to be when Jacksonville University head coach Jennifer Steele was hired in 2017, for whatever reason she just didn't seem like the right hire or fit for Marshall at the time. Lucky for us she was here less than a year.

I wanted Malissa Frost (Head Coach at DII Indianapolis University, Marshall player 1995-98) both times the job was opened. But was pleasantly surprised when we got a B12 setting HC, especially one that had won at the B12 level. Coach Megan Smith had 6 30 win seasons in a row when she resigned at Kansas and took over Marshall.

Coach Smith has went 39-18 and made it to the CUSA Finals with about the same roster that Jennifer Steele went 24-29 with.

We have most of our starting line up coming back next year. Smith and the staff just need to go find a pitcher or 2 and preferably an Ace.

RE: C-USA Softball
Rough day for USM softball. Our head coach resigns today unexpectedly and then shortly afterwards our CUSA pitcher of the year announced her intent to transfer. The coach had been here 5 years and this was by far her best year. Rumors have it she wanted to spend more time with her family which involves 2 middle school aged kids. As well some speculation she’s taking a high school job less than 10 miles away that will pay nicely and have a lot less time and travel involved.

It's LA Tech (43-14) vs Marshall (39-19) for the CUSA Softball Championship today.
Regardless of the game's outcome, hopefully both teams will move on to the NCAA tournament.

Unfortunately and unlike 2017 Marshall doesn't have a strong enough RPI to make it at as an at large. Beginning the week Marshall's RPI was 82, in 2017 it was 27 so no matter what we were in in 2017.

If Marshall beats LA Tech then I think we are both in, Techs RPI was 50 entering the week, if not CUSA will just get 1 in.

Does anyone in Denton know if N Texas will take a bid in the NISC (Softball's NIT). They have an autobid since they won the regular season.

Marshall 0 - LA Tech 0. Each team stranded two runners in the first inning. Tech is the home team coming to bat in the bottom of the 2nd.

RBI triple for Morgan Turkoly. Then Tech sacrifice bunts in another run.
LA Tech 2 - Marshall 0 in the bottom of the 3rd.

Marshall responds with a solo HR, but the next 3 batters go down in order.
Tech scores on a wild pitch in the B4.
LA Tech 3 - Marshall 1 going to the 5th.

Very disappointed in losing 2 pf 3 in the tourny after being the 1 seed, but it was still a positive year for our softball program. Congratulations to both Marshall and LA Tech. Both are very good and either will represent C-USA well.

I'm certain North Texas will accept the bid to the NISC. If we didn't, I'd be surprised.

Congratz to LA Tech, good game, you all just had more timely plays than us today.

Also want to thank the Marshall seniors in Abigail Tolbert (P), Samantha Loose (INF), Ali Burdette (P), Hayden Ellis ©, Hannah Giammirino (OF), Abigail Estrada (OF) and Briana Diass (INF/DH).

All 7 seniors are already working on their masters and 2 are working on their doctorate. And all 7 have a 3.6 or higher GPA.

Dude our Athletics choke in the finals. We’ve lost 3 (maybe 2 men’s championship games), 4 softball championships, 1 football championship, a tennis and maybe a few others since being in CUSA. At best we are 4-9 in CUSA championship games. Trust me I’m proud of those teams but I’d like a few more banners and NCAA tournament appearances.

I think almost every one of those Marshall teams, except 2013 football, reached the finals without being one of the top 2 teams in the league.

I just don’t like the word “choke.” Sometimes you play pretty well and lose. Sometimes you play an equal team and it’s not your day. Sometimes you’re not as good as the other team.

I wish the record was better, too, but it’s not always a “choke” when you lose.

I think Tech chokes in big games more than Marshall. We've lost both football conference championship games we've been in and always have a stupid exit in the basketball tournament when we're favored to win.

Heck of a season for the lady Herd. Big turn around fron last year. Congrats to La Tech, I thought all year that they were the best team in conference and they proved it. I just wish we could get more than 1 bid into the ncaas. Marshall, UNT and WKU are all worthy but it wont happen...

Don't go away mad, just GO THE F AWAY. Don't need your support and don't want it. Go play with Ohio or Akron/Kent State or put on the piss yeller and blew of the Errs up north. No one on any message board LIKES you.

The Herd wasn't even suppose to be here this year. We won 39 games where we were expected to win anywhere between 18-21.

Here is the Coaches Preseason Poll (first-place votes)
1.Louisiana Tech (9)
2.Florida Atlantic (3)
3.UAB
4.North Texas
5.FIU
6.Middle Tennessee
7.WKU
8.Marshall
9.Southern Miss

Marshall's RPI is to low to even think about an at large. Had N. Texas or WKU made it to the CUSA Finals they may have had a chance to sneak in with WKU at 53 and N Texas at 56.

This team was night and day under Jennifer Steele and Megan Smith. Ive said it in this thread I didn't feel Jennifer Steele was the right hire or fit and we are lucky we only had to have her for less than a year. We aren't that far away from being a to 2-3 program in CUSA, another good hitter and a few more pitchers, one preferably an Ace.

What are you talking about? I’ve never had any trouble out of any person on this board other than Marshall fans. Trust me I’m proud of the team but I was just stating something. Guarantee I’m a bigger fan and I was the majority of home games for the softball team so I knew what they were capable of. I won’t be going anywhere because I’ll always be here for the Herd! And if you look at my post history I’ve never talked bad about the program unlike most of you. Always trashing Doc after a loss, Dans system after a loss, or Mike’s Scheduling decision. So I think you need to go away because i bet if you ask the board more people like me over you. ??‍♂️
