First to hiring Tubby, yes I would, no he is not an option. He is sailing off into the sunset with his first love, in a year when we actually make a move he will be even further down that journey.

Second I didn't think Tubby was right for Memphis. I though he got a raw deal. He informed the administration what he would do, how he would do it, how long it would take. They said ok and hired him. I thought he coached well and that he would have you in the tourney this year. That's not the same as being right for Memphis. Some Memphis fan's opinions that he can't coach are simply absurd, their assertion that he wasn't a good fit however is obvious. Your administration knew what it was getting though, Tubby has been consistent where ever he has gone.

Memphis wants the spotlight, it wants to be talked about, and it wants to win, in that order and all three are required. Tubby only does one of those. At Tulsa we want a clean program, we want good basketball and know it when we see it, we want to win in that order and you need to do all of it. Tubby can do all three of those. Thus a good fit for Tulsa although I think we would be concerned because he seems very disillusioned with big time basketball right now. Being at his alma is probably the best outcome.

If Tubby was not right for Memphis, then you should forever and ever not criticize the Tigers for firing him after last season.

Tubby is always on the prowl for more money and jobs for his sons. If you want him, give it a shot and make him say "no.

This 1983 is why your program is a joke. It's why you'll sit here preaching everybody is jealous of you while fighting for .500 for the next three years till they finally fire Peso and no one wants your job.

At the end of the day, it was a business decision. On both the hiring and firing fronts. Empty promises by the Big 12 before the hiring. Financial common sense decisions on the firing after the Big 12 flaked out.
CEOs get fired everyday by their Board of Directors if their company's value declines under their watch, and the Memphis brand value was in freefall under Tubby Smith for the forseeable future.

Attendance was at a 50-year low and apathy was at an all-time high. We were facing an $800k/yr penalty by the Grizzlies for falling below the minimum attendance threshold at the FedEx Forum.

Penny tripled attendance overnight. Tubby is a great floor coach, but he's completely tone deaf to what it takes to run a financially successful and viable D1 program in today's era of college sports.
