To be honest our defense the two years under Withers was easily the worst in JMU history.
Rip Scherer's defenses were much worse. We had great offenses with him but were always in a shootout.
EW: 18-7 (0.72) at JMU
RS: 29-19 (0.60) at JMU
Funny how much our standards have gone up over time. In the Alex Wood timeframe, RS was seen by most as a good coach. We were not as happy with EW, even though he had a better W/L record. If CC's record looks like EW with early playoff exits, he might be run out with pitchforks. Not that I think there is any chance of that happening.
Rip had a couple of playoff years and his teams won a number of games coming from behind. Very exciting years.

Yes very exciting years and the competition was much better. Look at JMU's schedule in Rip's first year. His 9-4 that year was much greater than Withers 9-4 in his first year. I would pay a lot of money to watch JMU play these same teams in 2019. 5 of them have moved to FBS while JMU sits and waits.
Virginia Tech
Central Florida
Appalachian State
UMass
Georgia Southern
W&M
Richmond
Towson
Liberty
Youngstown State
Northeastern (yep, used to have football)
Playoffs
Delaware
Samford

Almost half our schedule from that season is now FBS.
If you told us back then - UCF, ASU, G Southern, ODU, Liberty, & UMASS will be 1A in 25 years, but JMU with a new stadium, averaging about 22k a game, and having won 2 1AA championships will still be 1AA. That would of been hard to believe.
