Cacok and Toews made my Lineup of the Day in the General forum. If I did a Lineup of the Day 100 more times I don't know if I would have another lineup that included teammates both of whom did not attempt a three. Cacok is tied with Wright-Foreman for the most times on my Lineup of the Day with 4. Today was the second time I honored one of your players other than Cacok, as I honored Gadsden once.
It was not poor defense this time that got W&M back in the game. They made some very difficult shots to get close. Credit Bill and Mary for not giving up. Our guys played a solid game. More solid than the score shows.
33,
I felt that the closeout by Cacok of all people was good and the Milan just hit a tough shot. If you give a Tribe shooter any look from 3, it's a problem. For the most part, they did a better job. IT"S ABOUT EFFORT and recovering weak side. It's not easy at all. You may think that you make the effort but are just a tad late or off balance in that critical pre-closout. Some steps were made towards that end but they need to even get better.
Nation,
You don't want fun like that because you want stops and good offensive execution at the end. Hawks had it in the bag and the game was really never in doubt in my mind. Still, it's about executing your half court offense and not trying to just protect the ball. Kai learned a lesson tonight, I hope. He still needs to be in "attack mode" to get the defenders to back up or better yet cause a foul or a score. You have to milk the clock but still attack. You can never let up in games and just think that you've won the game. Hopefully they've learned something because this should have been a 10 point spread at the very least.
Great points Bill. McGrath talked about how this game can be a learning experience too, even though it’s a win. Let’s hope they can do just that and build off of this, no more disappointing setbacks.

To me it even goes further than that because I look at it from a coaches standpoint. You can look at box scores, you can look at how efficient you are and even then that doesn't tell the whole story. Tonight, looking at the game, there were a few guys that got overlooked. Fornes didn't score a point tonight which is rare, but played well. You could see his effort out there on the defensive end of the floor. BTW....he was a plus 13 for a team high and he didn't score. Taylor was a plus 13. O'Connell was a plus 9. Sims was a plus 7. This is only 1 game here and you have to prove yourself over time and many games. I'm sure that several guys have a good plus/minus for other games.
Take it for what it's worth, but I know when guys are playing the right way and it eventually comes around on the offensive end. You pay the price on the defensive end, bust it and earn it, and then you deserve it. It has to be that way at this level.

I'm glad we won, but trying to gloss over a blown 17 point lead is sticking your head in the sand. We still gave up 88 points when it's all said and done, but the Tribe happens to have a worse defense than we do, but not by much. As I stated in the thread, we were LUCKY they weren't hitting 3's in the first half because a lot of them were wide open.
Right now, the only way we win is when we play a weak defensive team and score 80+ points. The announcers mentioned this scoring number for us multiple times. That's a pretty tall order required for us to win. Furthermore, it's not a realistic number come tournament time.
Yes, celebrate the win. But we still have not proven we are a good defensive team in giving up 88 points.
We have now given up 88, 88, 87, 83, 82, 61, 83, and 73 points in CAA play. That is not sustainable for a winning team. We're not THAT good on offense.

Agreed. Which is why I wasn't interested in the whining about how they made it close at the end.

Wow! 82Hawk, you and I are on the same wavelength. It's important as fans to focus on the positive and support our team but as you said, 'not stick our head in the sand.' We've been down this road many times before. Winning cures everything momentarily but the same patterns exist. We should have won this game easily but we FAILED to defend the 3pt line against a team that is renowned for shooting the 3 even in an 'off' year. It's inconceivable to me that we could not lock down shooters and force the drive against a team that is not like Hofstra and able to do both shoot the 3 and drive as they did in the second half. Chew on these stats:
In the last 10 games opponents are 115/281 from the 3pt line (40%). That defensive percentage puts them in the bottom 5 of 351 teams in the entire NCAA D1. They are still flirting with defeat as the last 7 minutes showed. Absolutely ZERO improvement in this area despite the team moving from M-M to zone/press more often . This stat is the most glaring of any other defensive area including turnovers.
It's disheartening to see this same thing game after game and is most certainly a 'system flaw' as otherwise noted in previous posts pointing out the lack of denial on the weak side and painfully slow slow close outs in favor of overloading to the ball side. Honestly, I wonder what the staff is looking at in film session week after week.
Having re-read my own post it sounds like a CNN alarmist commentary. However, you cannot fool a true basketball fan and I am not about to be fooled by what I see as deficient game planning. An adjustment should have been made in the last 7 minutes to prevent a comeback when W & M started to bomb 3s.

Allowing teams to shoot 40% from three is the same as the same as allowing them to shoot 60% from two.
100 x 3 x 40% = 120 points
100 x 2 x 60% = 120 points
If we were allowing teams to average 60% from two, we'd consider it a crisis.

It is worrisome for sure, but let's be real, Newark ALWAYS has problems. I'd walk before i'd ever fly in/through there again. JFK is the less of the 3 evils in NYC.

Yikes, effecting you too? I know our fearless leader has had a "break" too. Both sides need to pull their F'n diapers up and come to the table and get $hit done!
