UAB - UTEP Thread
Because someone had to start it...

After slow start and getting behind 13-2, UAB has come back to within 2, 13-2. And Zack gets his 2nd foul

76-63, Blazers win.

Tavin Lovan is going to be a great player. Aggressive and explosive athlete that plays within himself. Very composed for a freshman.

Better shot selection by the Blazers tonight. No reason for this team to be launching 20+ 3PA's. Throw it inside or take it to the basket unless it's an open, in rhythm look.

I think Tamell Pearson could have used a RS this season too. Got some potential but he's not really ready to be in the rotation. Lovan looks so much more mature and composed. The game is also slowing down for PSG but not for Pearson yet. Losing Butler is gonna hurt bad against the upper echelon of CUSA. Duh.

Lovan was a beast. I hate that Butler is gone, but it may help Pearson become a better player getting more time in the rotation

Great job shutting Gilyard down in the second half. 21 1st half points. 4 second half pts

Absolutely! Lovan and Bryant really stepped it up in the 2nd half. Sullivan looked good the whole game.

The dunk by Lovan was a momentum changer.

Lovan was fun to watch. Butler is a big loss, but Sullivan stepped up tonight.

UTSA will be a tough test on Saturday.

UTSA is coming in off an embarrassing conference loss to preaviously winless MTSU. They will either come in looking for redemption or come in playing tight, trying not to get two straight losses after being undefeated.

On the other hand, UAB will be looking for some revenge over last years 12 point loss at home.

Lovan is very talented but thing I like most about him is his composure. He knows his game. He doesn't jack up bad shots out of his range or try to do too much. Needs to work on his perimeter game but he doesn't hurt you with it. Gueye would be a much better player if he played the same way. Makhtar has a lot of talent too but he wants to be a wing. He's a 20% 3pt shooter but has to brick a couple every game.

Gueye is the ultimate tweener. He wants to play on the wing but lacks the quick first step to beat defenders who are playing off him off the dribble or the consistent outside shot to make them close out on him.

He has some very good post moves but lacks the bulk and strength to establish low post position against most other bigs. He could be great for us if he can turn himself into a 35% three point shooter or add another 20 pounds of muscle. If he does both he could play in the NBA.

According to KenPom the team ranks #312/353 in adjusted tempo and #328 in offensive possession length. I love it, especially since they're still doing a good job of scoring (i.e. the games aren't 50-43). Going to state the obvious here and say that if this team could score from the perimeter better (29.9%, #325) and shoot free throws more consistently (65.4%, #307), we'd have a pretty good team on our hands.

Yeah, he wants to play like a European big but doesn't really have the range. Wish we could utilize him at the high post somehow, around the foul line. He's improving on the offensive boards. Just stay inside the three point line and crash the glass.

I wish we were better of course but I enjoy watching this team. They hustle and pull for each other. You can support the team (including the coach) and enjoy the rest of the season, while still believing we need to make a change.
