"Less than a week after Mike Locksley lost his first choice for Maryland football’s offensive coordinator job at the last minute, he’s hired former East Carolina head coach Scottie Montgomery to the position, as first reported by InsideMdSports’ Jeff Ermann.
Montgomery, 40, coached at ECU from 2016-18, posting a 9-26 record in a rather unfavorable situation. However, the Pirates went 2-0 against in-state rivals North Carolina and NC State during his tenure. His teams were more productive on offense; in 2016, ECU tallied 5,605 yards of offense (467.1 per game), the fourth-most in school history.
Before being named the Pirates’ head coach at age 37, though, Montgomery was well on the rise as an offensive coach. He started his coaching career at Duke, his alma mater, where he served as receivers coach from 2006-09. He then held the same position for the Pittsburgh Steelers from 2010-12. Montgomery returned to Duke as associate head coach, wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator in 2013, and was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2014. That season, the Blue Devils went 9-4 and were ranked as high as No. 19 in the country.
Montgomery’s recruiting history includes prospects from much of the southern East Coast, most heavily in North Carolina and Florida. At Duke, he also helped develop Jamison Crowder into an NFL prospect. And while it’s hard to credit Montgomery with Antonio Brown’s NFL success, he was Brown’s position coach as he went from sixth-round pick to Pro Bowl wideout. Montgomery was a star receiver in college himself; he’s still second in Duke history with 171 receptions and is in the top 10 in almost every receiving category.
This ends a chaotic search for Locksley’s right-hand man. Gattis was the long-reported first choice and had reportedly accepted Maryland’s offer before Michigan reached out, offered him seven figures and hired him in five hours. Former USC offensive coordinator Tee Martin had also been connected to the position, but Locksley ultimately went in a different direction.
Maryland enters 2019 with most of its offensive playmakers returning. Anthony McFarland headlines a talented backfield, while a slew of young wide receivers—most notably Jeshaun Jones and Dontay Demus—made impacts last season. With Kasim Hill rehabbing a second torn ACL, Tyrrell Pigrome figures to start most of the year (unless, of course, Jalen Hurts comes to town). Locksley is expected to run an offense similar to what he called at Alabama last year, and now he’s got Montgomery on board to help run the operation"
