RE: Lots of unsold tickets to CFB Championship - Southerners don't travel
Sooner or later it becomes the norm instead of something special. I almost went to the Alabama vs Oklahoma game at the Dolphins stadium. You could get decent tickets for $100 which I would have paid to watch those two play in person. I love San Francisco as a city to visit but if I was a fan I would not be fired up about a road trip to San Jose. This is not exactly the time of year I would want to visit San Francisco and definitely not San Jose. Living in South Carolina I knew a ton of Clemson fans who went to the last National Championship game. This year has been tougher for them with a Dallas game and now San Jose so back to back trips out West. I had plenty of friends who went to Dallas just see Jerry World and some interest in Notre Dame despite them being a hybrid conference member of Clemson.

We went to the Rose last year to see my spouse's Bulldawgs play OU. We had wanted to go when Texas played, but it was just too complicated and expensive with young kids. This time we took them and they appreciated it. We went to the last two SEC ccgs, but they were in Atlanta, so it was a short MARTA ride to the stadium. My spouse went to the finals last year, but as high as the ticket prices were, even though it was in Atlanta, the rest of us decided to watch on TV. Now we went to the Sugar Bowl to see my Horns play UGA, plus we love visiting New Orleans. We've been to a Sugar Bowl before. But even New Orleans, we wouldn't go every year. We certainly wouldn't fly all the way to LA every year.

Now there are fans who will go every year, but not 30-40k.

Probably should just pick Orlando or Las Vegas as the permanent site. Both are huge tourists spots, easy to get to and smaller capacity stadiums. Guess you could rotate between those 2

The Peach Bowl and CCG were day trips for us with travel time being about 3 hours round trip. The Gator Bowl was enjoyable but we mapped out things we wanted to do on the way, and that was when we didn't live an hour away from that one. The Tangerine/Citrus was a fun trip. But New Orleans was a blast, especially if we stayed in Metairie and then if we wanted to break the trip up a bit there was Biloxi . Part of the family flew out to the Fiesta when Auburn played Oregon. The commute to the venue from the accommodations was a pain.

We'd all be better off if semis were played at a neutral venue very near to the higher seed team, or even at the home stadium of the higher seed. I'm good with it either way. I think the finals should be a destination game, but one that is much more central.

JRsec,

That is as close as a partisan like you will come to mea cupla.

Truth is Southerners do not travel well. If it's farther than you can drive in 3 hours Southerners stay home. (which is what you said). They are too cheap to purchase airline tickets, take a couple days off work and go to the West. The UCF-LSU game in Arizona (which is cheap airfare) is an example of Southerners not traveling. The National Championship game is another example. They do not travel like Wisconsin, Penn State or Oklahoma fans. Facts are facts.

Good luck to the Las Vegas Bowl in getting any SEC fans to come to that game. (Note, Las Vegas Casinos are well aware that Southerners are the one section of America that doesn't come to Las Vegas anywhere near as often as people from everywhere else in the US; so they are gambling they can change that.)

The Rose Bowl was about 60/40 UGA fans. They were even talking about it on the OU boards. Facts are the bowls love SEC teams. Just because they love Big 10 teams doesn't mean they don't love SEC teams also.

As for the Fiesta Bowl, how much of that was due to UCF? UCF has barely been playing football for 30 years, let alone in FBS. They don't have the built up generational fan base. And as the cost of these games go up, the age of the fans goes up. The Sugar Bowl crowd definitely skewed older than when we went in the 90s or when my wife went in the 80s.

They filled it in the 20's when they had to travel by rail.

What they are tired of is getting fleeced for the experience and having their money go to Left Coasters they don't really care to visit.

The South has traveled well to about anywhere. Auburn filled up the Fiesta. But the trip was crappy and the accommodations 45 miles away. Where we come from we call that a piss poor experience, except for the game. Would much rather go to Big D, the Big Easy, or Nashville. Even San Antonio offers a superior experience.

No Stugray, it's not an issue of Southerners not traveling. It's an issue of Southerners enjoying the experience and not having to put up with ******** when we get there.

For an admin you sure do like talking smack

JRsec,

Put up or shut up. Travel for you teams or admit you are a wuss, scared of people outside your region.

Not taking your BS. Ohio State would see 10,000 local ex-pats from Ohio in the stands, plus 15,000 traveling from the Buckeye state. Same for Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Texas, Nebraska, Oklahoma or Penn State.

So where are those Southerners? Put up or shut up.

So where are those Southerners? Put up or shut up.

Alabama sold out its allotment for the Rose Bowl when they played there..
Auburn sold out its allotment for the Fiesta Bowl when they played there.
L.S.U. sold out its allotment for the Fiesta Bowl.
Georgia sold out its allotment to the Rose, and had thousands of fans outside the stadium in South Bend last year. They sold out the Sugar Bowl allotment as well.
Hell, Auburn even sold out its allotment to the Music City this year.

We don't place 11 bowl teams for no reason.

Those allotments were all 15,000 or greater, except for the regular season game at South Bend.

We travel. So show me where we don't.

If the attendance at the National Championship game is off it will be with those large shares of tickets that the local accommodation people siphon off for profit and a guaranteed 3 day stay. The Fiesta was low attendance, but that's different from the allotment sales which for that bowl are around 17,500. Even Atlanta was stifled by the UCF game. But that's a matter of appeal. I would submit that if the Fiesta's overall crowd was down this year it was once again due to the match up. But L.S.U. sold out its allotment.

Now what's your response? This was a troll thread which you are want to do. And I see Rutgers Guy is chiming in too. How lovely.

Now in all seriousness how many ex-pats from Clemson or Alabama live in San Francisco or San Jose? The issue you are trying to tack on our travel is not about travel at all. It's about whether or not the SEC has fans living in the greater diaspora of the West Coast. We probably have more in Seattle than about anywhere else out there, and that wouldn't be a throng. There is quite the contingent of SEC fans in New York City, but then that's true of most major conferences.

So I respond with those who actually travel who would equal or exceed the 15,000 Buckeyes you reference, depending upon allotment. Just ask the Irish. But do we have 10,000 former SEC grads living in the Bay area who would be interested in seeing Alabama play Clemson. No as to the 10,000 and no to the interest for the few who might be there unless they are Alabama grads. It's a piss poor location for a game between Alabama and Clemson, let alone the 4th game between the two in the post season.

Now that gets to another interesting question. Why don't more Southerners live outside of the South? I would say that is because we are currently the source of jobs. Like Northern Midwestern cities in the 30's and 40's were once the mecca for work, now the South and Southwest is. Most of our alums are staying near home. But now, many Northern Midwestern grads are moving to the Beltway, the Big Apple, or South along the Atlantic seeking work. So your Diaspora is greater than ours. The climate already made the Gulf Coast a mecca for Northern retirees. So yeah, when your teams come South you sell your allotment and have plenty of locals to scoop up more tickets. But none of that means we don't travel well. Selling out allotments proves otherwise. What it means is that we don't have people living in droves extant the South.

I see that as a blessing, not a curse. And probably why so many bowl games are in the South. We have the climate, we have the Northern Diaspora, and we have throngs of native Southerners to draw from. Climate alone is why the Pinstripe and the bowl in Detroit have issues.

So find yourself another issue to ply because this one is a dead one.

To 2nd that, the Notre Dame people were saying they'd never seen anything like that when UGA went to South Bend. We knew a number of people who went. It was probably the lowest % of Notre Dame fans in the stadium they have ever had. Red and Black was a significant minority. Missouri said the same thing when UGA went there the first time for a regular season game, about 12,000 Georgia fans.

JRsec,

Give it up. The empty seats tonight are a blemish on the South. Pure and simple.

Call it trolling if you want. The tourism board numbers in Las Vegas hold the strongest evidence of Southerns not traveling West. It is what it is. You need to travel year after year to support your teams, not one year and then not after that. Otherwise you do not travel like Mideesterners or Northeasterners. One time show up is not a pattern.

The local sports writers are asking us why we are not attending, and the answers are various, but basically, "not my school" and "not my state".

Anamolies are not indicative of overall performance. You're just trying to score some political agenda point on this one.

The South travels well everywhere, including Pasadena. The issue lies elsewhere. The lack of Southerners living out West west is the first demographic to check. I answered your question. I answered it with results. We don't get to play out West often and when we do we've shown up and sold out allotments. If we don't generate enough interest with West Coast audiences, and don't have enough alums living nearby there's not much to be said for the sale of tickets beyond allotment, which is after all what we are talking about.

Face it, those bowls were intended to draw regional teams (Rose Bowl excluded).

The SEC regular season attendance averaged 9,000 more per game last year than the Big 10? How come Notherners' don't support their local teams better? The SEC led the PAC in attendance last year by an average of 25,000 per game. Why don't West Coasters support their schools better?

These are silly questions for trying to explain demographics, economic issues, cultural issues, and the fact that most Southerners find nothing appealing about flying to San Fran to drive to San Jose. Put the blame where it belongs, with those who picked the site.

That's common sense. But as Voltaire said, it is unfortunately most uncommon.

Couldn't readily find this year's attendance, but it looks like the schools from the midwest didn't attend too well last year.
https://www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/c...story.html
Western school (Washington) and Penn St. and still only 61k in Fiesta? 37 in Pinstripe with Iowa and BC? 65k with Wisconsin playing Miami in the Orange? Michigan only drawing 45k to Outback with South Carolina? Mich St.-WSU 47k in Holiday? All of those were declines from the prior year. Purdue-Arizona increased in the Foster Farms bowl, but only to 28k.

What were the top attended bowls?
UGA-OU 92k Rose
UGA-AL 78k Atlanta
AL-Clemson 72k Sugar
UCF-Auburn 71k Peach
UT-Mizzou 67k Texas
USC-Ohio St. 67k Cotton
WI-Miami 65k Orange
LSU-ND 57k Citrus
TCU-Stanford 57k Alamo
ISU-Memphis 57k Liberty

In fairness Quo, Bullet's statistics prove him to be flat out wrong and trying to make his whole case on this one flawed bowl.

And no I didn't say that we would only drive 3 hours. I said that attendance was higher for the games in Atlanta against unpopular opponents because it was only a 3 hour drive.

The SEC fans buy airplane tickets to games too far away to take the 50 to 100,000 dollar RV. Obviously you've never attended one of the game days in the SEC. They start showing up on Wednesday for Saturday's game and even though we might only have 87,000 inside the stadium we'll have another 20,000 outside of it in tailgating slots that they paid for, watching HDTV's hooked up to a generator and eating a wide variety of cuisine.

They do this during baseball season as well.

If the SEC folks were too cheap to fly they wouldn't have sold out their allotments for the Fiesta Bowls, Rose Bowls, games at Gerry World, and anywhere else they didn't want to drive, like South Bend.

You are just feeling stank for a yank and want to pull some chains to see what kind of response you can get. But the real response is nobody down here gives a crap about California except for the fact that the title game is being held there. So no, there's not a lot of desire for Clemson/Bama part 4 when you have to fly to San Francisco and drive to San Jose to get there. We all have HD's and it's not the Rose Bowl with all of the side sights of L.A..

I wouldn't call it a blemish, unlike anybody in the Big10 we are actually playing in the game.

RE: Lots of unsold tickets to CFB Championship - Southerners don't travel
Meh, Westerners don't travel much either.

CA is an odd place. There's great jobs, but they're all held by people who grew up elsewhere. CA has an awful education system, so most people who grow up there can't get the good jobs. The cost of living is astronomical, so without good jobs the native Californians can't afford to travel outside the state. So they never even realize just how different the economic situation is in the rest of the country.
