RE: CUSA NET Rankings
North Texas and ODU have shots at earning an At Large bid if they finish out OOC strong and can take care of things in conference. No one else has a shot imo.

I guess you are just looking at records and not who they beat?

3 D2
1-12
2-11
2-9
4-8
5-6
3-9
Portland 7-7
Hawaii 8-5
Indiana State 8-4

that's not how you earn a at large bid...

UNT would probably be staying home even with a 30-3 record if one of those losses came in the CUSA Tourney.

12-1 is a lot better than being 6-6 but the UNT OOC schedule is awful... not how you earn a at large bid

If ODU ran the conference table and lost in conf tournament (I am not predicting this and do not think it will happen) they would earn an at large

North Texas has zero shot with that non conference schedule if they won every game after besides CUSA title game....ODU same as well......Another season, another 1 bid only for CUSA......

NCAA Selection committee gives out 1 at large bid per year essentially to a Non P7 league. The chances that either of those teams get it, even with good RPI's are slim and none. Especially if Buffalo, who actually has an at large worthy resume, somehow fails to win the MAC.

Yes MT is not very good, but no one in our conference would have a winning record with our schedule.

So do NET rankings take into account non D1 games in it's calculations or just includes the record as a courtesy? I ask as USM is 5-3 vs D1 teams

I have no idea to be honest.

It's interesting as in RPI North Texas is only a 66, but in the NET they are a 41. I have no idea but I'm guessing RPI puts more weight on SOS and NET puts more weight on wins? Either way, its something to keep an eye on throughout the season.

Everyone keeps saying no way North Texas could get in but NET is what the committee is going to use. They already sit at 41. In years passed they would be a 66, that's a big difference.

NET only counts D1 wins. So NET sees us as 9-1 with our 1 loss to #15 Oklahoma on the road.

Correct. The selection committee is not a computer. Even if UNT and/or ODU finishes with a NET ranking in the 40s we would not get an at large. UNT lost that chance in Oklahoma and ODU lost that chance in the virgin islands.

RE: CUSA NET Rankings
Interesting that the NET gives more weight to win% and less to SOS. That is actually a move towards us (G5) if so. Literally half of RPI was opponents win%. And another 25% was your opponents' opponents win%. Since 2/3 of your opponents are in conference, and 2/3 of their opponents are also in conference... so a huge chunk of RPI is just your conference. How does it make any sense for you own actual win% to only count 25% of your RPI? But that is what it was. I think NET is probably an improvement.

Having said that, there are 32 D1 conferences. There are 68 NCAA tournament berths which leaves 36 for at large bids (somebody correct me if I'm wrong).

So to have any chance at an at large you are going to have to have a top 36 NET rating. And if history is any indicator you will actually have to be a little better than that since the selection committee sets up rules and then changes them as it pleases them.

I don't know how many conference wins North Texas or Old Dominion will have to have to move from where they are to the top 35 in NET but I think it will be very brutal in that top 5. Nobody will be unscathed. Believe me now or believe me later. It will be war.

Will be interesting to see it all play out.

Just one of many reasons college basketball sucks nowadays.

Earlier in my life, I was huge college basketball fan. I attended Final Fours, the Regional Tournaments, etc... But today...I've throttled it back a bit. Its just so "fixed" and contrived from the outset. It really isn't as inclusive as it used to be. And that "inclusiveness" is what made the March Madness popular to begin with.

Way more inclusive than college football...

Agree to disagree. If either UNT or ODU run table until tournament championship they’re in.

The nice thing about the NET is it doesnt reward for the "quality loss" like the RPI did. You win games, you move up in NET. I think we could all be pleasantly surprised by how the NET favors mid majors who win games and not .500 cartel schools. Of course, the humans may change the rules on the fly as someone said.
