RE: Official Game Thread: Wyoming
Kenpom favors ETSU by 4 over Wyoming at a neutral site, 72-68. The 3-7 Cowboys are ranked 210th by Kenpom. Bucs are 136th. Wins for Wyoming are at home over 111th South Carolina (73-64), neutral over 194th Richmond (68-66) and at home over 268th Grambling 86-78. Losses are at home to 267th Denver 90-87 (their first game without PG Ny Redding), at home to 152nd Northern Colorado 85-80, at 183rd Evansville 86-78, neutral site to 99th Boston College 88-76, at home to 250th Niagara 72-67, at 72nd Oregon St. 83-64, and at 147th UC Santa Barbara 76-66.
On December 11 Wyoming lost 6-2 180 Sr point guard Nyaires Redding, a starter at the point in the first 9 games with 6.3 ppg, 2.2 rebounds and 1.9 assists, who was suspended from the team and dropped from the roster after being arrested for his involvement in a fight. That leaves only 6 guys in the rotation who average more than 9.0 minutes a game or more than 2.4 points or 1.0 rebounds. If the Denver game is any guide, 6-2 163 Fr A.J. Banks may be picking up a lot of his minutes.
Stats are fairly mediocre. Best marks are decent 3 point shooting percentage of .361 (114th in D1) but only 7.9 makes (200th in D1) and a low turnover rate of 11.9 per game (42nd in D1) with a t.o. margin of +1.0. Rebounding margin is -2.8.
The big star is 6-7 190 Sr Guard Justin James with 37.8 minutes, leading with 24.5 ppg (compared to 13.8 for second place Hunter Maldonado) and tied for 8th in ppg in D1, 9.8 rebounds (to 6.8 for second place Maldonado), 4.3 assists (to 2.3 for, again, Maldonado) and 3.2 turnovers (to 3.0 for, you guessed it, Maldonado). He was first team all-Mountain West last year and tested the NBA draft waters, but returned to school. He’ll be a tough matchup. With Redding gone, five guys are left who average 27 to 37 minutes. A 6th gets 20.7. Nobody else gets more than 9.0 minutes or any significant production.
The Bucs need to get it together before conference, which looks to be the deepest and most competitive since we’ve returned to the SoCon.
