RE: Big Ten's Delany wants MSG for basketball tourney
College Basketball IMHO will actually increase in stature over the next decade. Having 2 hour games and a new NBA draft friendly rule should help fan viewership.

If the schools could ever get control over their tv rights for basketball, the way they do for football, BB will instantly far surpass college football in revnue for the schools.
[/quote]
True to a point, but the post-season bb contract has more mouths to feed than the football championship contract does - not to mention it funds the NCAA itself without any monies from the football playoffs pot. But at some point when the football monies stagnate or don't go up enough the P5 will likely set their eyes on that huge pot of $$$ somehow someway.
Cheers,
Neil

Hypothetical. What happens when that CBS contract ends? What if the Power 5 conferences balk and demand more money for their participation in the Big Dance? What if they say we will sit up their own tourney? Is that possible? Could that happen?

At the moment the NCAA is empowered to negotiate the NCAA men's basketball tourney so the P5 would likely have to withdraw from the NCAAs to negotiate a separate one which isn't very likely at this point in time. Might be something that occurs in the 2030s though, especially if TV football monies don't grow as desired.

RE: Big Ten's Delany wants MSG for basketball tourney
Bumping this thread with the latest news:
Quote:The ACC and Big Ten were rejected. The Big East is going nowhere despite overtures from those power conferences.
It has reached a contract extension to continue to play its postseason tournament at the Garden for at least the next decade, as first reported by The Post Sunday morning. The extension is for two years, going through 2028, though there was an opt-out for both sides after 2022. According to a source, the Big East will pay significantly more in the new contract.
...
The ACC and the Big Ten had been in contact with the Garden to potentially play their conference tournaments there, according to sources, putting pressure on the Big East to act. But now, they’ll either have to play them a week early, like the Big Ten did last year, or go somewhere else. The ACC has played its tournament at Barclays Center each of the last two years and is scheduled to return to Brooklyn in 2022.

Not a big deal to me. Syracuse and Pitt would take Big Ten invites in a NY minute. No reason to keep the crown jewel of our conference at an outpost.

Delaney is talking, in essence, about the P5 withdrawing from the NCAA. Right now an automatic qualifier from a weak conference gets the same money for losing in the round of 64 that a team gets for playing in the national championship game. That’s nuts.

You have no clue about Cuse. We fit so much better in the ACC than the Big Ten.

I did preface the comment in the beginning with "At the moment".
And technically (even though I think you know this, someone else may not), teams playing in either the semi-final or the championship game produce no additional revenue for the conference since NCAA bb units end after the Regional finals are concluded while just making the tourney either in the First Four round or in the Round of 64 as the entry point, the losing teams in those games (again, as long as it's their initial round) each have earned 1 unit for their conference.
But on their way to the Final Four those select teams have earned with 5 or 6 units depending upon where they started (First Four or Round of 64).
Cheers,
Neil

Yes, it's a shame that Jake Crouthamel had his head stuck up his rear end, as the Orange should have joined at the same time as Florida State.

No. Syracuse's best fit was the Big East, until the Big East was no longer viable.

BE was a sort term solution, and failure to fully explore the ACC inquiry showed arrogance and a lack of vision on Jake's part. What a shame.

Syracuse hoops wanted to be with the Big East schools, but football wanted to be with Penn State. It makes sense why they weren’t interested in the ACC until some of those Big East schools joined the ACC.
If the Big Ten offered Syracuse and Kansas membsership, I believe Syracuse would be gone.

No. Unless Jake could have foreseen the ACC's intent and success in destroying the Big East a decade later.

I dont believe that to be the case. Before SU joined the ACC, and If an invitation came from the ACC and the BIG at the same time, I am absolutely sure that SU would have chose the BIG in a "NY minute." But if a BIG invitation came today, I am reasonably sure that SU would decline.

Interesting take about what if the Big Ten and ACC had both offered SU at the same time. I suspect the $$$ and the previous snub by the ACC back in 2003 likely would have resulted in picking the Big Ten so I am happy that never happened. We are where we belong.

Glad to hear that. Syracuse seems like it’s part of the family. BC, Miami and Pitt not so much.

Pitt is a better fit in the ACC compared to any other existing conference as far as institutional profile, athletic department size, and geographical focus.
I wouldn't imagine Pitt would be tempted to leave, all things being relatively equal and the ACC remaining a viable power conference, unless, perhaps, say Syracuse left for a conference that enabled that other conference to dominate the northeast leaving Pitt to feel isolated. Pitt wants to be in an Eastern conference, because that is how it has historically operated and perceived itself. Like Syracuse, it has a lot of familiar faces in the ACC, including Notre Dame, Miami, BC, and Virginia Tech.
