Ratings for Individual ACC Teams 2013-2018
I decided to break this down into three categories - regular season conference games, out-of-conference and ACCCG games together as one category, and then overall. In each category it does not include ESPNU games, similar to the conference ratings I just recently posted but does include Mirror Games (like the previous post) giving half of the viewers to each game.

Regular Season Conference Games Average Number of Viewers:

Florida State - 3.094 million viewers (44 games)
Clemson - 2.980 million viewers (40 games)
Louisville - 2.486 million viewers (23 games)
Miami - 2.316 million viewers (35 games)
Pittsburgh - 2.160 million viewers (12 games)
North Carolina State - 2.040 million viewers (17 games)

Good work! Of course there's still a lot of noise in the data (e.g. who did they play OOC?), but it's already clear that there are tiers...

Thank you.

Agreed about the "noise", especially in terms of the middle category which looks at both OOC as well as the ACCCG.

As a VT fan I am sure I don't have to tell you, but for others who may not be aware:

Clemson - 5.338 million viewers (ACCCG)

Ohio State - 10.585 million viewers
Tennessee - 5.790 million viewers
Alabama - 5.170 million viewers
West Virginia - 4.740 million viewers
Notre Dame - 4.473 million viewers
Ohio State - 4.310 million viewers
East Carolina - 2.560 million viewers
Notre Dame - 2.449 million viewers
East Carolina - 2.150 million viewers (ABC/ESPN2 Mirror Game)

In terms of the regular season conference category the data shows the Atlantic teams are helped by playing Florida State and Clemson (as well as to a lesser extent Louisville) annually. But this is also true of Coastal teams as well who only get one shot at them every seven years.

Again for VT (regular season conference games that received 2.5 million viewers or higher):

2018 - Florida State - 5.576
2017 - Clemson - 4.693
2018 - Virginia - 3.553
2014 - Georgia Tech - 3.140
2014 - Virginia - 3.050
2017 - Miami - 3.011

Cheers,
Neil

Why was there expansion? Where would the ACC be without expansion?

Overall Average Number of Viewers:
Virginia - 2.148 million viewers (16 games)
North Carolina State - 2.070 million viewers (20 games)
North Carolina - 1.974 million viewers (25 games)
Boston College - 1.698 million viewers (20 games)
Duke - 1.441 million viewers (18 games)
Wake Forest - 1.314 million viewers (21 games)

5 of the bottom 6 in viewership were original members. (I'm counting UVA as an original member even though they joined a year later).

I wonder what BC's viewership was during the Matt Ryan years?

Don't forget Louisville too!! Why was Louisville picked?? The viewership stats show why, IMO. Orange Dude, not questioning you at all, but what was your source? I want to do something similar for the SEC and the Pac 12, maybe C-USA and SunBelt too, if I feel up to it.

If Cuse continues to win...they'll be up in the top 4-5. Spread out fan base dose well throughout the eastern time zone.

Depends upon who else is doing well during that time frame and who each team plays. In the conference data above UL has four games that drove them way up:

2014 against FSU - 4.970 million viewers
2016 against Clemson - 9.924 million viewers
2016 against FSU - 6.216 million viewers
2017 against Clemson - 5.206 million viewers

This to me means when UL is good, they will garner great ratings against upper echelon ACC programs.

While SU, not playing well until this year, only has one game against those two programs that received 4 million viewers+, and as you say that was this year against Clemson.

Meanwhile Pitt who has been average has the one game that they played against both FSU and Clemson over 4 million viewers as well as a game against Miami (2017) with 4 million viewers plus.

So my hunch is that if all of (listed alpha) Clemson, Florida State, Louisville, Miami, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, and Virginia Tech were operating at an above average to high level over the next six years a similar exercise like this would probably mean SU's ranking is more determined by annual games against 4 of the other 6 programs (more opportunities to get lots of viewers) than because we are SU. Time will tell and...

Of course we need to get to that level on consistent basis first. 03-wink

Cheers,
Neil

Also helps if a school like Cuse. Pitt and Ville have a great QB, RB, or WR in contention for national awards. That draws eyeballs to non-King programs.

Cuse's HC is starting to become a name...which helps draw in more neutrals.
