All other sports besides football
Which realistic conference would you want and why? Excluding the obvious A10.

I chose A-Sun. I like the potential for growth there. I do like some of the teams we’d face in the CAA, but not enough to change. I believe the A-Sun will add up to three more teams in the future.

Would you want to leave for the A10?

RE: All other sports besides football
I say we think big, especially with the conference realignment coming soon. Why do we have a short term way of thinking about this topic? Have we not seen what has occurred in the past couple of years when most thought it was impossible? I say LU grows their national identity and progress their network/advertising and do business properly. With a adequate growth in academia and athletics, we can be a hot commodity for the mega conferences in the next realignment. Let’s think big people! Lol

Yep.

Ideally and if we remain independent in football, then our goal should be Big East or A-10.

Of the options in the poll, I picked the A-Sun since that is where we get the majority of our students and athletes. There isn't much difference between the performance of each of the conferences.

My thoughts too. LU has grown rapidly in under 50 years of existence. Vision and ambition played a part. LU should continue to strive for the two best non-football conferences (should football stay independent).

I agree, but I think the A-10 has 14 schools so they'd likely only expand if they lost members and they may not even be worth joining if that happened. I am under the impression that they want nothing to do with us even if they had an opening and we really developed our program.

The Big East could be our final home. It may actually work in our favor that we are a school of faith like their collection of schools. They may be saving a spot for UConn but we'd expand the footprint in a good way and aren't too close to an existing school the way Dayton is to Xavier, making them unlikely for an invite no matter what. The Big East schools have a good academic reputation and we have lots of work to do to catch up and reverse perceptions.

Just my 2 cents not being a Liberty guy, but, with the potential the ASun has, especially since Liberty joined, would it not be in the best interests for Liberty to stay in the ASun? Let's look, the potential I am referring to is the possibility of 2 or 3 in the tournament, and I dont think the ASun will have more than 10 schools, ever. So with multiple schools possible in the dance and only 9-10 schools, pay out per school would be potentially higher than in the A-10. The Big East only looks to want Catholic schools, so it would seem they are out. The only other conferences I would say would be a good idea is the American or C-USA. But I also think Indy in football may be an asset for Liberty long term.

It’s no disrespect to the ASUN but the A10 has more interesting programs to our fan base. VCU and George Mason would draw huge crowds. Richmond would be similar to Radford. There isn’t really a team, maybe FGCU, that’s going to fire up our fan base in the ASUN. Money isn’t really a concern. Fan engagement is the top priority and the A10 would help that in my mind.

I am more hyped about Lipscomb than FGCU. It’s a competitive school and a border state.

FGCU is #2 for me though.

RE: All other sports besides football
If the choice were between A-10 and Big East which would be preferable?

A-10
Davidson, Dayton, Duquesne, Fordham, George Mason, George Washington, LaSalle, UMass, Rhode Island, Richmond, St. Bonnaventure, St. Joseph’s, Saint Louis, VCU

Big East
Butler, Creighton, DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, Seton Hall, St. John’s, Villanova, Xavier

I believe I’d prefer Big East.

I would also select the Big East, but we would need to be in the tourney contatly in the next few years. Also, most (if not all) of the institutions in the the conference are Jesuit Catholic schools. The only connection that we have with the conference is being a private school (not sure if all schools involved are private). It would be nice to have a new rivalry with Georgetown in the future.

Butler is the only non-religious school in the Big East. Mens basketball absolutely needs to be upgraded. That must be top priority in order to get looked at for either A10 or BE. Liberty does have field hockey in the BE so there is already a small connection to the BE.

RE: All other sports besides football
The Big East is the pinnacle of conferences that don't play football. If we aren't going to be in a P5 conference, the Big East should be our target destination.

Even if we improve our basketball profile up to an acceptable level, they may still not want us. Them knowing that we would leave at the first opportunity to join a P5 conference would really hurt our chances. They went through that before the split with the American and don't want to do that again.

We do make for a logical expansion candidate as far as locations go. Unfortunately, we are more of an Atlantic coast and southeastern school rather than a northeast and Midwestern city school. We wouldn't bring many fans to games in Chicago, Cincinnati, Providence, etc.

I agree with your second statement based on location but I don’t see us going P5 if we get into the BE and settling in. We would know how it feels to be denied before ( twice), and a great opportunity to grow our Olympic sports in a great conference like the BE is quite hard to resist. The only P5’s that would work is the ACC or Big 12. I don’t see the ACC happening and who knows what will happen with the Big 12 in a few years. McCaw has a lot of relationships and connections in the northeast, so the BE is perfect. Football as an independent can stand on its own.

It would be a massive mistake to not go for a Power conference. The exposure, the money, and the benefits from being in any of the Power conferences is just too great to ignore. We could conceivably build up to that as an independent but could lose it quickly if we hit a rough patch. Football is such a revenue driver and marketing tool and we've worked so hard to get to FBS, we'd be very unwise to say "Okay, this is it. We've reached as far as we want to go."

BYU is a geographic outlier for every conference but the PAC 12 so they are very limited in where they can go. We do not have that problem as we are in Virginia that borders/includes states that are occupied by members of the SEC, Big 10, Big 12, and ACC. Of course that doesn't mean we have a shot at all of those, particularly the Big 10 (they won't like that we are private and religious) and the ACC (they don't need another Virginia school as long as VT and UVA are members). However, if we build up our program enough and show that we can make a conference money, I think we'll get an invite, and that threshold is currently lowest for the Big 12.
