OT - city of Houston to get new XFL franchise in 2020

They're playing their games at UH's football stadium. Good deal for them financially (as long as the league makes it I guess). Oliver Luck is the president of the league so he's a pretty good guy to run things I'd say.

Joining Houston among the eight XFL charter cities are teams in Dallas-Fort Worth, playing at Arlington's Globe Life Stadium (which will be open after the Rangers move to a new stadium in 2020), plus Los Angeles (StubHub Center), New York-New Jersey (MetLife Stadium), St. Louis (The Dome at America's Center), Seattle (CenturyLink Field), Tampa (Raymond James Stadium) and Washington, D.C. (Audi Field).

It's actually a pretty good deal for Rice football players too. I could see a few current Owls having a chance at a league like this (Cephus, Fox, and some of the freshmen are the guys who seem most pro-ready to me).

I wonder if Rice was even consider because of the great location and larger stadium. I would guess the condition of the facilities (restrooms, press box etc.) drove them away.

That or the XFL wasn’t part of the McKinsey Report. What’s not part of the report is not part of the future.

This is a bit off-topic, but the new use of Notre Dame stadium for events (Garth Brooks in October, the Winter Classic Blackhawks NHL game on January 1) makes me wonder about the role of the stadium in generating revenues. It has been a long time since a concert was held in HRS. Is it that the finances don't make sense in comparison to nrg or TDECU?

Mash them together with "Wildcatters".

Lack of parking will kill any thoughts of HRS hosting events

Is the parking really any better at UH?

TDECU is a modern venue. It has all the amenities that spoiled fans these days demand. It's a nice place.

I was around when they did the 'Monsters of Rock' show at Rice. According to the coaches then, the event pretty much destroyed the Astroturf surface. The only reason it went forward is that they were supposedly going to replace the surface later that summer, so they did the 'what the hell, its on its way out' thing.

The Texas Rangers are apparently footing the bill to modify their old facility to host the XFL franchise up here (while still ensuring the facility is viable for baseball). I don't know what the stadium is now called, but I think it was formerly The Ballpark at Arlington.

Wow.

I mean, the Ballpark at Arlington, is a dull unimaginative space, second worst in MLB to Tropicana (IMO) , so what better than to square-peg-round-hole a bad stadium to something it wasnt designed for?

This will likely go as well as hiring Greenspan did.

To me, the worst thing about the former Ballpark is that the combination of the various suite levels between the decks and the office buildings in center field mean that the facility is almost totally enclosed, except of course for a roof. On hot days that means no breeze gets inside so fans simply swelter in still heat. And Arlington has plenty of hot days. That makes it the hottest park I have experienced.

Old parks without all the suites at least had gaps between the decks for breezes to work through.

I think the team should be called the Houston Chapter 11’s because I think there is a good chance this league will be as successful as XFL I was but without nicknames on the back of their jerseys.

What exactly is the differentiator for the XFL? I was never able to get my puny little pinhead around that for the first tranche of its existence, and am still unable to.
