Even so, that aspect is secondary.
To that end, you hire the best coach you can within your budget who will accept the position.
Liberty, having as close to unlimited resources as any program in the nation, hired the best coach that would go there.

We should be so lucky.

With their available resources and an apparent "all in" commitment, Liberty will likely be at the level of a BYU at their peak within a very few years.
LU, with all it's warts and idiotic past actions and stances, has a committed Prez and admin to win with athletics. An envy of many wanna be schools. A position of support the JMU crowd would do anything for. Hate them, or hate them more, everyone likes a winner and winning does attracts supporters and fans

You seem like a clear-eyed Liberty fan. Real talk: Does hiring Hugh Freeze, especially coming on the heels of hiring Ian McCaw, give you pause?

Yup. Truth is nobody is going to be talking about the exact coach they decided to bring in at this moment in time. If one can take a step back, it is clear that they got tired of waiting to get out of the small leagues. Paying a ton of money through the NCAA waiver process. So if Hugh Freeze can get them going, 10-15 years from now this is all behind them and perhaps bragging on the next coach's moral compass will be more accurate.

Until then, LU is doing what it takes to get what they want. And their neighbors over in Rockingham County can continue to curtail ambition.

Their commitment is financed by “passing the plate,” which has given them deep deep pockets. It’s easy to write checks when your coffers are full. We don’t have the same luxury - and I’m glad we’re not financed in the same manner.

RE: This will make some JMU fans unhappy
Reading this makes me sad and worried. There was a time when sports was a vehicle used to help young people develop character, you know, things like determination, commitment, respect for others and to learn you can't win them all, so learn how to win and lose with grace. Sports has always been a metaphor for life.
This "win no matter what" mentality is a large part of what is wrong with our country today. It starts at home and in part on the playing fields. We see this attitude in our politicians and hate them for it then turn around and justify it when it suits our needs. The mere fact that we place so much importance on sports says something in itself.
Once you become pragmatic, it's a very slippery slope. The ends do not justify the means.
I am very thankful ODU does the job they do in maintaining a sense of proportion. I would be very disappointed if Selig ever hired coached with this kind of baggage just to "grow the brand". I wonder how confused potential LU fans become when they hear Jr. talk about Christian principles, then hires the likes of Freeze and McCaw.
I guess I shouldn't be surprised, after he embraced Trump I knew the school had lost its' way.

Any potential affairs are way down the list of Freezes troubles. Dude is just a grade A scumbag. (As is the AD).

Coming from a religious institution tells you everything you need to know.

I can answer that. I am free here on this board, and others, to chastise LU. Some, a few number of LU fans, are like me, realistic about the school, it's athletic programs, and it's "mission".

How can a school that touts Trump, with all his indiscretions, then hire an AD and HC with Me2 movement challenges and hooker calls? And then profess it's "mission" is the way, that is 100% in direct conflict. That beats me.

As a LU sports fan, not a alum, member of the flock or one who drinks the kool-aid, the "mission" is many times used as a convenience. All schools need to have a mission statement and do. LU creates theirs as being elitist and exclusionary. Like I'm a member of the club and you are not. No school, authority, group, program, belief has the exclusive membership. That membership is equal to all.

And I'm okay with the Freeze hire. He's just consistent with the philosophy that's in place at LU. As long as he does not screw up with another hooker call and keep his privates in his pants, and WINS, he'll be okay and maybe an even very good hire.

With all my challenges and dislikes of the actions and positions of the school, I do admire their commitment to achieve athletic success. An upgrade and expansion of facilities, hiring a SEC former HC, and an overt statement to play alongside the best is a bold and challenging position. Now if media hungry JFJr can keep his distance from Trump, and Freeze not call hookers, and McCall not run amok with allegations, everything should be okay. Now that is a "mission".

You seem like a clear-eyed Liberty fan. Real talk: Does hiring Hugh Freeze, especially coming on the heels of hiring Ian McCaw, give you pause?
The perception I have of the Freeze hire. He can coach. He can win. He can say the right things. He was available right after Gill suddenly retired. LU was required to act swiftly.

The win at all costs vs. moral dilemma for LU. Nobody questions if Freeze can coach and win. LU hungers for FBS success. Freeze brings baggage of highly questionable moral character. As did the McCall AD hire. So LU has a history of politely turning the other cheek when it's perceived to be advantageous for the school.

And Freeze will likely use LU, as he used ASU and as he stumbled out of the SEC. The paradox for me is that Freeze accepted the LU HC job rather than at TN or another SEC school as an assistant. That adds a huge prestige factor for the LU admins. Did Freeze think he could use LU for 2 or 3 years then return to P5 glory? Likely. Did Freeze think he can bring LU to high prominence and bowl eligibility as he professed at his news conference? Likely no.

And the most ironic part of this whole drama is that I believe he is the best HC for LU at this time. He'll recruit well and win some unexpected games and one can expect no more call girl calls. LU has shown that it will compromises it's values when it's convenient and provides perception. Why else would the school Prez still be a Trumpite with all his baggage?

Let's play devils advocate. I sincerely believe this whole thing was orchestrated. Freeze was contacted at some point in the past. He agreed to terms, then Gill was told to either retire or be canned.

I wonder if LU gets really good how it will affect their scheduling. Will these big schools still want to schedule them when it's not a guaranteed win?
