Yeah, that is interesting. Maybe he's interviewing for a GA position? Or is an assistant coach departing? WBB assistant coach?
He's a high caliber guy, would be glad to see associated in coaching wherever he fits in.

Actually at Wingate, here is his bio:

My guess is that he could be a candidate for DOBO if the position opens and then maybe the 3rd assistant coach, if a position opens.

oh man, what happened to Rafus? when was it announced that he's leaving? did it happen during the season and i completely missed it?
next season will be rough. Chad Bush is going to sound like Bob Uecker in Major League.

Mid season he was no longer with the team, not on the bench anymore. He is currently listed on the transfer portal on verbal commits.

This from the main MAC board about UB. They have problems with lack of returnees (as do we). I believe the poster is zrb2.

You can't blame Oats for taking a massive raise and going to a multibid P5 league and a school with incredibly deep pockets. And he's at least doubling the salaries of all of his assistants and staff.
Good MAC programs in just about any sport will almost never have stability. If they excel, coaches will get lured away by P5s. If they are mediocre or worse, the coaches will be canned due to high expectations. The longest-tenured coaches in this league are guys like Hawkins, who does just enough to keep getting renewed but has won zero NCAA games and is now trending downward. Or Murphy at EMU, who cobbles together a decent program but has so little support that his .500 MAC record looks like a minor miracle. Dambrot was the closest thing this basketball league had to sustained excellence... and he never won an NCAA game and was still hired away by a program with deeper pockets.
Buffalo will have to keep its commitment in terms of money and fan interest (and hope like hell that the new hire is great) to sustain what they had. As an Ohio fan, I can tell you it's not easy.
Buffalo graduates a ton this year. Whoever comes in will still have talent, but if the expectation is to carry over this year's results to next year, they'll be disappointed with whoever gets hired
The Hawkins kid is out and now another highly touted recruit, Dre Allen, has asked for his release from his Buffalo commitment. This thing is imploding. I think the Bulls only have 6 guys left on the team and no big man. It's going to be a complete rebuild year. I got the mid-major blues.

Excellent re-post you shared, Steve. That is excellent analysis by the poster. And he does raise a good point about how hard Murphy’s job actually is. How hard is it to recruit to EMU given the relatively low support base! are 2 sides to the same coin. Yes Murphy is a disappointment for his middling season this year given the talent he brought in, but he did bring in the talent. We might get another coach who better utilizes his talent, but will he may not bring as good of talent.

RE: Basketball 2019-20...and beyond
Those contract extensions MAC schools give to coaches are insane, plain and simple. They are honestly a one-sided agreement to pay a coach for future seasons when his buyout is chump change for a Power 5 institution. I looked at his roster early this season and Oats was obviously gone, he would have taken the job at Rutgers if that was all that was available.
If a MAC school wants to keep a coach around, pay him, just increase that buyout number.

I think the UB contract extension was CLEAVER for both Oats and UB.
Oats increased his salary which increased the starting point for salary discussions for his next job.
UB also got to increase (significantly?) the buyout.
If Oats stayed, UB wins. If Oats left (as he did), UB wins again.

Lot of unfilled HC jobs for 2019-20. Surprised it is that many. At least a half dozen prime jobs which mean we'll see some musical chairs happening.

Nice info Steve! I am so glad this coaching carnage is happening in Basketball rather than Football. We have a coach on the radar screen of the Power 5 revenue sports and it is definitely not our BB coach.

I don't know that it will effect us, but a lot of dominos should start to fall as these positions start getting filled.

Steve I am 100% confident that our head coach is not on the short list of any of the aforementioned institutions looking for a coach. Huger at Bowling Green and Kowalcyck at Toledo are the ONLY MAC coaches worthy of a look.

We are likely looking at a total rebuild this year and in 2020 no matter who is coach. This last season imploded the program's future in many ways. Had we had a successful season with over 20 wins and over .500 Murphy would be back and the program would have stability. As I have stated before I think Murphy would have liked the U of D, Northeastern and UC-Irvine games back and the one MAC game where Groce blew a bunny. Honestly I think last year was Murphy's worst year as a head coach even worse than the Raven or Ray Lee, Toney and Mangum debacle aka as the gang who couldn't shoot straight. The good news is that we should know by early February whether next year's team will reach 20 and if not we can start looking for a new coach.

They are setting Rob up to fail. I would imagine the environment to be pretty toxic and uncomfortable when he's around.
Our best case scenario is a secret audio tape OR Rob resigns.

I agree with you, this past season was the greatest disaster of the Murphy era. We were absolutely embarrassed in games versus the Power 5 and struggled to beat Davenport and Drexel in the non-conference. In the MAC we won a lot of 50/50 games where the ball bounced our way, our nine conference wins (11 last year) could have easily been four. As bad as it was, it could have been worse.
Probably the major disappointment was the progression of the "Big Three", Thompson, Jackson and Minnie. I think we all would agree that this nucleus of the team performed far better in their junior year. And for that matter, who else on the team truly became a better player year over year? In most cases like McAdoo last year and Silver this year we are suddenly surprised by their offensive acumen late in the season. Unfortunately, however, rather than the individual players improving, Silver and McAdoo just got hot shooting at the right time and avoided the "Murphy Hook" and were allowed to play some minutes and display their innate skills. Let the transfers go and be sanguine about it. They were never going to develop at EMU and perhaps they will elsewhere.
I don't like the 20 win contract extension provision at all. Murphy whined about his schedule this year and he did indeed play a lot of teams who made the NCAA tournament, unfortunately he was 0-8 in those games. Play the tough schedule again, make those Power 5 games respectable, win at least 11 games in the MAC, and I will be on your bandwagon to stay for another year no matter the total wins.
