in good news, we probably moved ahead of W&M next year by standing pat.
You said the same think about Sherm.

Fired for no reason? Is that what is being said? I honestly don't know and am curious. I'd think if JMU had a Head FB Coach or Head Men's Hoops Coach or pretty much any head coach of any of programs that saw him/her go 16 years and never win a conference championship, they'd very likely be fired and for that reason alone.
I just assumed that is the "reason", but perhaps I am incorrect.
Really. You would have fired Shaver too? Wow, I am stunned. W&M was in the CAA championship game multiple times and it feels like they were always in the top half of the conference. Winning championships should not be the sole criteria. W&M basketball will pay dearly for this move.
Do you remember when UVA fired Welsh because he could not win championships? How long has it been since then? They still have not recovered from that blunder.
Probably not the ideal time to cut ties with Shaver at W&M, I think they let that thing go way too long as he just could never get them over the hump. I think Shaver is did just a slightly better job that Brady did at JMU......but it was evident that after 16 years W&M got tired of just being 'OK'. The move surprised me but cannot say it was unwarranted. I think it was poor timing being they were 'OK' this season and poised to be really good next year.

Actually, I'm talking about the reason W&M fired him. What I think matters none. You said "for no reason". Normally, when you fire somebody there is a reason. I'm guessing it is because he didn't win a conference title in his 16 years there. But, again, I could be wrong. Maybe there is another reason. Or, perhaps, the AD just woke up in a bad mood one morning and decided he needed to fire somebody with no reason. If that is the case, I bet the conversation when he informed Shaver of the firing had to be unique. Maybe something like...
W&M AD: "Tony, you're fired"
Shaver: "Why?"
W&M AD: "No reason. Just feels right. Get outta here."
Now that is an opinion you have to respect.

JMU did the same with Mickey Matthews and it eventually worked out. I think it was bad timing on their part. Should have let Knight finish his senior year with Shaver along with some other good players coming back.

RE: CAA Hoops 2018-19
W&M better have fired him because they had a better coach waiting. If not, they made an incredibly stupid decision.
I'm not going to say WM had no reason to fire him, but I will say that their reason is flawed. I think they feel like they deserved better final results. I think they felt like they should have at the very least made 1 NCAA tournament under Shaver. If you're a fan, I understand being upset about not making the tournament and wanting to do something.
They need to bring in a guy that is unquestionably better than Shaver and I don't know if they can do that. I have a feeling they will end up hiring an assistant from a P5 school that has little to no experience as a head coach and throw money at him. If they were to do that I think that would be a big mistake. They need a splash hire and I think they may have trouble getting what they want.

And that's the thing. I question in W&M's case whether Shaver should have been fired. But if that's the route you choose to go, the expectation is you're going to get a guy measurably better-NOT guy who might be.

Just think of it this way, W&M just upped the arms race for CAA basketball.

I'll wait to see who W&M (and Elon for that matter) hire as head coaches before I am thinking either of them has upped any arms race in the CAA.

Good. And I mean that as a compliment because I'm glad we don't have to face him anymore. He's pretty good. Has a slim immediate shot at the NBA (IMO), but can possibly get a D-League assignment to work on his game or play overseas. If he doesn't sign with an agent, he can get a "free" evaluation from the NBA folks and return to W&M if he desires.
Good luck to him. Seems like a good young man.

W&M just lost its lone recruit and a good one at that. The leveling is now complete (but could change if these guys opt to stay on).

Certainly a big(ger) name, but didn't do much in his three seasons at UNC or his six seasons at SMU, and he's been out of coaching for eight seasons. Kudos to Elon for getting the name factor I guess.

Doherty apparently now isn’t going to be the Elon coach- the news on social media was erroneous.

That's probably a good thing for Elon....he's been a hc at numerous stops and has struggled. Believe he's Assoc. Comm for A-10 most recently.
