RE: Official Game Thread: Creighton
Back to serious D1 basketball as the Bucs go once again from the sublime to the ridiculous (or vice versa).
In Big East member Creighton the Bucs face their highest rated OOC opponent: #33 in Kenpom to #85 for Illinois and #89 for Georgia State. #73 in SI to #86 for Georgia State and #98 for Illinois. The Big East Coaches poll picks them for 9th in the still powerful Big East.
But Creighton is coming off a first game in which they struggled to fend off Western Illinois, 78-67. Western was 12-16 last year and ranked dead last in the Summit League both last year and this preseason.
The Bluejays only field 2 guys over 6-5: Slovenian star Martin Krampelj, 6-9 235 JR, who can score inside or out and rebound; and 14 minute role player 7-0 230 Australian FR Samson Froling.
They shot 9-20 (.478) from 3 against Western with half a dozen guys putting them up, including 6-9 Krampelj and 7-0 Froling. They are probably even better long range shooters than GA State, but don’t have as much athleticism going to the hoop as guys like Simonds, although 6-4 194 So. Ty-Shon Alexander comes close. Fortunately, there aren’t many guys like Simonds.
They went 9 deep against Western with 30 bench points and 23 bench rebounds. 6-5 200 So Damien Jefferson was a key to providing physical, athletic defense, rebounding (12 boards) and inside scoring off the bench for Creighton.
If we thought that home court helped Georgia State, well these guys put 16,449 in their arena last game (they average over 17,000), and in their last game shot 20 free throws to their opponent’s 9. Get used to it, play smart and play through it.
They played tight second half defense against Western Illinois, holding them to .324 FG% and .214 from 3 to turn a 2 point game into a 16 point lead before Western closed it back up a bit.
Despite the relative lack of size they out rebounded Western by 46 to 40. But the Bucs have been rebounding pretty well themselves. Armus, Rodriguez and Harrison should all be able to take it to the rim against the slightly smaller Jays.
The Bluejays might also be peeking ahead in their schedule to meeting Ohio State November 15. Stats cited below are from the opener with Western Illinois.
