well, where is Miller? At least we got 2 guys in the majors currently, with more upside, dubious or not.

Miller signed with the Rangers.
So yes, the Braves made out in the deal.

Just saw as well. Freaking crazy. Now that Hosmer contract looks especially bad.

Sounds like the Nats are preparing for him to sign with Phillies.

SD has a great farm and *some* good young talent on the major league team but they have a lot of work to do to even sniff the post season. It'll be interesting.

RE: Hot Stove 2018/19
What are the odds Machado exercises his option in 2023? I'm gonna say near zero unless he stinks up the joint. (Hosmer exercising his option for the last three years at $13MM per? Near 100% unless he can turn things around.) So the realistic number is closer to $428MM than $528MM but the point is still valid. Padres have a **** ton of money invested in a team with zero guarantees of post season, while the Dodgers odds are much better this year (and next, at least) with peanuts for long term commitments. Two ways you can take that: Dodgers are efficient and smart, or they built a terrific team spending by spending a **** ton of money and now they're going to see how long they can coast. I'm leaning toward the latter at the moment. Dodgers cleared the luxury tax threshold so they should be able to spend but refuse to do so (so far). Their farm is still *ok* but not in the upper tier it was just a couple of years ago. Prospects for sustaining start to look a little sketchy after 2019 and more so after 2020 without some new talent.

They'll have to invest in more free agents (Keuchel would be a good start) and/or make some trades asap to make good use of the investment in Machado. And hope that their future free agent signings perform better than Hosmer.
I assume the ownership rationale is that having a team that is at least on the fringes of the playoffs every year will sell plenty of tickets in San Diego because the Padres are the only game in town. IMO they still have to add more pieces to be consistently that good.

I guess? Petco is a great venue for fans in a fun part of town, but I've got a colleague with season tix right behind home plate and only goes to a handful of games every year. I need to check in with him to see if Machado makes a difference. My guess is that it might bump attendance a bit but if they're not winning that bump won't sustain. It's a SoCal thing - winners get attendance (except for Dodgers, who do well regardless).

Yeah, whether it's grooming their farm hands to produce in the majors or making good trades, they've got to do something. So far, the only thing they've shown they can do is stockpile young talent.

While some players may complain about the slow pace of major free agents this offseason, the facts seem to show that more of these players are not worth it than the few that are...and that it's somewhat difficult to know which ones are. These type of record-setting deals always seem to be bad news for the teams that go out on a limb. Can't blame Machado, but gotta scratch my head at the Padres for this..doesn't seem to make that much sense. Around here, Braves players and some fans upset we didn't dip into FA pool more, but I gotta respect the discipline of the current front office. Braves will have plenty of chances, over next few seasons/offseasons...and let's see how things play out in our division this year and what things look like end of June/early July going into the trade/arb deadlines. I think having flexibility around then is a bit more important than it used to be. Either way, looking forward to finally baseball season after a long, boring winter (unless the Knights catch fire again in the playoffs--right now they're fading.)

Didn't they just do that a few seasons ago when they traded for BJ Upton and Craig Kimbrel from the Braves and sent some big money on players that basically busted for them?
