RE: New School maybe
Looks like the "Growth by D2 Call-ups" strategy is alive and well for the WAC. Can we get some of those other names, though?

"The Western Athletic Conference contacted MSU Denver and several other schools and requested that they look into the possibility of joining the conference.

Dr. Grant shared that information during a Board of Trustees meeting on Sept. 14."

RE: New School maybe
We know Tarleton State wants to join and now Metro State. Some are obvious like large city California schools. I'd hope Western Washington and Chico State were contacted

Get the rehashed list again.
Metro St
Tartleton St
Dixie State
Western Washington
Chico St - Would the State rule of state funding prohibition on Texas inhibit this?

"requested that they look into the possibility" - I am not sure if this could be any more wishy washy.

There were conspiracy theory that CSUB was put into the BW, so a California Public school would not have to play in Texas.

This at least seems a little more legit than a random list cooked up by some conference realignment conspiracy theorist. We have an AD signaling that the WAC is at least being proactive in seeking members by asking several institutions to take a look at the feasibility of moving up. I have zero to no interest in speculating about who the other schools may or may not have been, but it is nice to know conference leadership at least has a pulse (even if ever so faint).

I think it was something about gender discrimination. California is no longer allowing state employees and officials to use tax money to travel to states who are deemed discriminatory regarding LGBT issues.

And for the record Crimson, y'all can keep the Bakersfield Birds.

RE: New School maybe
I would suspect Metro State would start in 2020 as Bakersfield departs.

Cal Baptist/Seattle
Utah Valley/Metro State
Grand Canyon/New Mexico State
UTRGV/Kansas City

If Chicago State is still alive at that point, they can keep the WAC out of grace period territory through June 30, 2022 when Cal Baptist’s transition expires.

Wasn't there a rumor that Metro State-Denver wanted to change the schools name to Denver State?

RE: New School maybe
The most important news in the report isn't that the WAC approached Metro State about joining, but that Metro State’s athletics department “is set to begin a feasibility study to assess its options.” So there's at least a glimmer of hope, moreso than in the past, that this could actually evolve into an agreement by Metro State to join.

As has been discussed here before, there's a lot to like about Metro State as a potential WAC member. While it's a commuter school, it has a big enrollment (24,000), it’s in the heart of the conference footprint, it fits the conference profile of being a non-football school in a large MSA, and it’s made significant athletic facility improvements in the past few years:

“The Regency Athletic Complex at MSU Denver was fully completed in 2015. The $24 million facility is home to Roadrunners baseball, softball, soccer and tennis... In addition to the sports facilities, a 20,000-square foot building houses locker rooms for each sports team, along with a state-of-the-art weight room and athletic training room. The building also features a student-athlete lounge and meeting rooms.”

https://roadrunnersathletics.com/facilities/?id=1

When a non-football school makes that kind of investment in athletics it suggests the administration is thinking about bigger things than preserving the D-2 status quo.

If Metro State can afford the transition to D1, they are in the perfect location (Denver) to joins the WAC. They fit the blueprint for what kind of program the WAC needs to prosper... a non-football playing school (large budget private school or large enrollment public school) located in a major city west of the Mississippi River, accessible by a major airport.

Apparently they were but UD or University of Denver did not approve:
Name change controversy[edit]

The then-Metropolitan State College of Denver Board of Trustees on March 9, 2011, approved a legislative proposal to change the institution's name to "Denver State University" following a vote among students and faculty.[15][16]

University of Denver administration and faculty publicly objected to "Denver State University" as MSU Denver's new name.[17][18][19] As a result of this, the Board of Trustees decided to cancel the planned name change. This brought up heavy outrage in the community, with a private university (University of Denver) deciding the fate of a public one (MSU Denver).[20][21]

On July 1, 2012, the name officially became Metropolitan State University of Denver. To coincide with the new transition from college to university status, the Student Success Building opened its doors and now houses administrative offices, including admissions and financial aid, as well as state-of-the-art classrooms.

Different names[edit]
