This sums up our performance against UAB

Who is our starter? Is Marshman going to start? And if Stankavage is injured, who backs him up?

FIU comes into this game at 4-2 and ranked 85 in Massey. Unlike UAB, FIU has an offense that can put up a lot of points against bad teams, including 63 on UMass and 55 on Arkansas Pine-Bluff. UMass is 12 spots ahead of Rice in the Massey Rankings.

Barring a miracle, FIU will likely cover whatever spread Vegas decides to set.

Mmkay. I’m convinced our defense isn’t as stout as some thought it might be a couple weeks ago. But this week we find our next quarterback of the future. Might be Marshman, might be somebody else.
Rice 56, International hoUse oF football 55.

Mike Jinks just got fired as the HC at Bowling Green.

Former Cibolo Steele HC, would be awesome to find a role for him on the staff if we have some turnover this offseason.

Not going to get the to the Top 25 (as Karlgaard stated was his goal) or even the Top 75 recruiting the SPC and TAPPS.

This was last year. If we can sniff that, I would call that a huge win. (one of few "competitive CUSA" games from last year)

ESPN's FPI has us with a 5.3% chance of winning, Vegas isn't making a line yet, and FIU ranks 90 spots ahead of us in the Sagarin (101 v. 191). Hard to be optimistic about the significant statistic on this game.

If we do anything other than meekly go down by 4 possessions before staging a credible scoring threat, I would call that progress over last week. The furthest we penetrated last week was the UAB 27 and we only crossed midfield 4 times.

I'm guessing the pyrotechnics probably also serves as a wakeup alarm for all of the on-campus students who were sleeping in. Too bad the football isn't good enough to have them want to then come out to the game.

RE: UAB postgame / F_U pregame
It has been really been painful to watch Rice's offense the past few games. It is unremarkable that opponents quickly adapted to Rice's "pound the rock" philosophy. It is an offense that is easy to predict and defend against, but hard to stop if the offense has size, strength, and skill. It has been remarkable how ineptly Rice has responded to the stacked boxes.

The perplexing part is that the QB's don't seem to have the accuracy (or the WR's don't run the routes) to consistently execute deeper throws or quick outs. But there has been some success with moving the QB out of the pocket or throwing shorter patterns that are not outs (stops, hitches, crossing patters), but Rice just doesn't call many of them. These throws should be easier for the QB to execute than deeper throws and short outs, and are a good way to utilize RB's and TE's in the passing game.

I would surmise that Bloomgren and his staff at this point feel like 10 guys with 10 shovels and 3 pickup trucks who have just been awarded the contract by the city of Rockport on September 4, 2017 to pick up the city streets.

Not going to predict an outright win but sometimes getting away from home is just what the doctor ordered for a struggling team. Also, FIU's run defense is ranked 102nd in the country on a yards-per-rush basis; UTSA and UAB were far tougher matchups in that regard (now 15th and 44th respectively, disregarding games against FCS opponents). 38-27 FIU.

The running game is hurt by the absence of Emanuel Esupka, who is out with injury. That, plus starting a redshirt freshman backup quarterback make me think they will be able to stop our running game, and I see no reason to think our passing game can make them pay for stuffing the box.

Also, I predict a season low (so far) in TV viewership, radio listeners, and posts in the Parliament game thread as the mounting losses take a toll on the faithful fans.

Good news: The Vegas line has moved in our favor by half a point nice the open.

Bad news: The line is still Rice +23.5. Not sure the last time we have been a 4 possession dog to a conference foe.

In 2016, after starting 0-6 and then giving up 44 to PVAMU, we were 30-point dogs on the road at La. Tech. Didn't come close to covering, either (16-61).

We were also 25.5 point dogs earlier that same year at Southern Miss but did cover that one (28-44).

Before that, well, in CUSA 2.0, from 2009-2011 (a/k/a the years that should have gotten Bailiff fired) we were 0-3 ATS as dogs of 21 or more.

I hope everyone has enjoyed this trip down Memory Lane!
