Tulane plays only one true road non-conference game. Let that sink in.
How did you you get FSU?
We played at FSU last year. Home and home. We've also had GT, Auburn, LSU, Butler, and a few others come here. It's nothing special.
We also hosted UNC two years ago at the Hornets place.
I assume it is because NOLA is a good recruiting area. Your campus arena is tiny. Is FSU playing there? Not sure FSU has the brand to move enough tickets at the NBA arena.

It's odd. I think it's because we're a semi-rich historic private school as well.

Billy...what are you asking? I said I was surprised midmajors are willing to pay almost as much as the high majors. I didn't mention ECU.

Dunno why I'm speaking for a grown man (I assume, could be grown woman, could be precocious 12 year old), but I think he expected that, for example, Wake Forest or South Carolina would be paying more money (twice as much?) for UNC-Asheville to come to town than ECU or Middle Tennessee would.
(I don't know or care if UNC Asheville is playing any of those schools, of if I have the name of the school wrong. It's an example)

RE: Basketball Buy Games...the theory behind them
I know distance to school can affect the price. I just assumed mid-majors would find teams willing to take less as paying $65-100k is huge hit for programs averaging a few thousand attendees a game.

The current situation is driven by the less-wealthy programs wanting the money at least as much as it is by the programs who pay. Look at what the Colgate and Eastern Michigan coaches said in the article linked by the OP.
Quote:[Colgate coach] Langel said. "Some schools, like ours, the institution will say, 'You need to bring in $2 million.' That's from fundraising, guarantee games, ticket revenue, whatever else it is. You need to bring in that amount in addition to what they're giving you to spend from their budget."
"I'm responsible for raising a certain dollar amount every year to help fund our overall athletic budget," Rob Murphy, the Eastern Michigan coach, said in a text message.
If the bosses of those coaches said, instead, "forget the money, just make a good schedule", then the "buyer" schools would have to pay a lot more for their home games, and eventually the cost would go up so much that there would be more home/home or 2/1 series. That's what has happened in football.
Of course there's a balance - Texas Southern isn't going to be hosting UK anytime soon for obvious economic reasons. But for more well off mid majors - anyone from Gonzaga to Buffalo - have more of an opportunity to do so. Miami's basketball program isn't in great shape, but I'd much rather have a 2-1 against even a bad power conference team instead of our NAIA games.

I'm guessing that it's a market clearing price - the price that enough schools are willing to accept to play a road game that any school demanding more won't get any games. Keep in mind that there is no value for the visiting school to be particularly good. In fact, if they're too good, they may have trouble finding games.

RE: Basketball Buy Games...the theory behind them
Took me a minute to find it, but this is a good article from a couple of months ago on TN Tech scheduling. The SEC rpi mandate stood out to me.
http://herald-citizen.com/stories/tech-a...dule,28054
Quote:‘’Having a good program, the SEC has scheduling mandates where you have to have a certain RPI over a three-year rolling period and we fit that,” Payne said. “Honestly, being a good team has helped us be able to get games.
“Those are big games and it is a credit to our guys and our team over the last few years that we’re an attractive schedule to other programs. This is nothing but a positive.”
IIRC, Memphis has a minimum game requirement in their contract with the Forum. Buy games are a must to fulfill the contract. I've heard the AD mention on several occasions about renegotiating terms.

At a certain point, if you are averaging only "a few thousand per game," you either just do a home and home, or you yourself are taking buy games.

That makes sense. The obstacle to getting those 2-1 series is that the cost of a buy game is so low that "power" teams can buy as many games as they want and don't have to schedule a 2-1 if they don't want to.

I remember reading a few years ago UTEP paid UC-Riverside $90k to play at The Don.
Looking at their schedule they have road games at Oregon State, Pacific, Air Force, Valparaiso, UNLV and UTEP. They’re getting at least $500k for those buy games.

Nice article...the TN Tech coach has a good outlook.
It appears quadrant wins will still be important next March but RPI is going away in favor of the "NET" system.
A through article on how the NET score is made.
