Also, did the call-back on DiNucci’s Houdini-like escape and long run for a first down look like a good call? The one replay they showed on the big screen in BFS didn’t appear to show DiNucci going down.
While I hate to make excuses, bc the level of play exhibited today was not deserving of a win, I do believe the refs made some iffy calls.
I taped the game and rewatched those plays. First, you could not see DiNuccis knee touch. At least i couldnt. Without definitive evidence to overturn, the play should have stood as called on the field. His leg started to go down, it never touched, then a defender blocked the view of the camera and he rolled out. It seemed like the refs, unless they had different views, assumed it touched. Which is improper.
Second, the hands to the face penalty was weak, but a close call. The hand came up from the chest to the neck area and it clearly made contact with the facemask, but the Elon players had their helmets so loose that the helmet immediatley came off making it look more severe than it really was. But at full speed it may have been difficult for the ref to tell.
The holding on the return I honeslty did not see from the replay they showed. Maybe someone else saw it. But regardless, we should have scored TDs instead of field goals, we should have not blown coverages on D, and we shouldnt have had the turnovers. The refs didnt help us today, but we simply cant win CAA games playing like that.
