Just wanna leave it here. It doesn't mean anything right now since what's done is done. I got to say after visiting Greenville the second time and with the improvements being made you have got a lot of good going on for ECU. I hope Montgomery works out for you because form what i saw you guys look like a decent addition to ACC coastal sometime soon.

1. Herring should have been put in at the end of last year when the season was shot. Because he wasn't, we're dealing with growing pains now. He's our best chance to succeed, so everyone needs to ease off his back a little. Carden was pretty terrible in his first few games too. The more he plays, the better he'll get.

2. I'd be pretty pissed if I was Kingsley Ifedi. When they did bench Reid, they should have gone of Kingsley as the #2. Instead, we wasted an entire quarter on the kid that all the local fans have a hard on for that we don't trust to throw the ball more than 2 yards. The "heavy" package is cute every now and then, but it's not going to win us any games as a first option.

3. If we can't get good pressure on Milton, UCF will roast us in a few weeks. With that being said, holy poo the defense is good at this.

This has been a really weird year, absolutely dominated all 4 games, could easily be 4-0 but the QB position has REALLY hurt us. If a random fan took a look they'd say Reid has had a decent enough season so far but his bad decisions and INT's have come at crucial times in the game, it almost cost us a win for a second week in a row.

We're in an odd situation for an ECU offense, we now just need a solid game managing QB. We've got a couple pretty physical WR's, a decent TE, a good slot guy in Proehl and 4 good RB's if you throw in Ahlers. There is no need for Reid being asked to throw it 40+ times a game IMO, believe they may be asking him to do more than he is capable of and it's hurting this teams success.

So does that mean the call was incorrect? No, it doesn't. Take it apart and read it again.
The CUSA Director of Officiating is saying that the CUSA officials should have ruled the catch an interception (since ODU is a CUSA team) and NOT ruled as they actually thought they saw it. That way, the CUSA officials would have given the CUSA team the benefit of the doubt and left it up to the replay official to change the outcome. Which, based on the replay, probably could not have been done since the call would have probably stood regardless of which way it went.
I personally would rather have officials call a game as they see it and leave it to replay to change obvious errors (as replay was intended.) I don't think officials should call a game to the benefit of their home conference and leave it to replay to "sort it out."

I'm gonna post the exact response I just posted on C-USA board:

In the stadium it looked like an interception (even on replay). However, the official came in and adamantly indicated a bobble. I couldn't see it on the replay so my gf and I started down to beat traffic. I stopped towards the bottom and checked a message board where someone claimed that we might be saved by the call on the field so we stopped and waited. When it stood we took new seats and the rest is history.

Now that I've watched it on replay multiple times at home, there is clearly a slight bobble and it is debatable whether the ball was fully secured while he was still in bounds or not. ODU player did have his 1st foot in bounds but as he is bobbling he begins to use his hand to pin the ball to his body. It appears to me that he does secure the ball against his body basically at the exact time his other foot lands out of bounds. However, it looks like the ball was still spinning/moving slightly even as he pressed it to his body initially. In other words, the official that came in and changed the call saved our season. I can agree on that. However, I'm not sure he was wrong. The play would have stood on replay regardless of how it was called on the field, there is no doubt about that.

Skip to the 2:46:20 mark below and decide for yourself.

Absolutely. You call what you see and use replay to correct glaringly bad calls.

While I can relate to your sentiments, I don't feel the same way about playing ODU. I like the idea of playing regional FBS and think the ODU series is a good one for those Pirate (and ODU) fans who like to travel to games. This could build into a decent rivalry if given the opportunity. I just wish they had a larger stadium, something at least 35K so it doesn't feel so FCSish.

a) Thanks for posting that. I had to leave the house with about 3 to go and listened to the end on the radio.

b) That's not a catch. Ball was moving until he was out of bounds.

c) Where in the hell was Herring throwing that?

d) Why are we throwing at all in that situation? That's just dumb.

ODU hosts ECU next season. I'm planning on going.

Precisely the kind of outcome that leads to bad blood and great rivalries. Hope we're up to the challenge when you guys visit Norfolk.

He said he was trying to throw to a WR who didn't show up. Busted route.

This. It would be nice to have a rival within two hours driving distance....

A few more games like this last one and I think we'll have one...

10000x agree. This is exactly what we need and I hope we can make it 2-1 in our FBS era to start making it interesting. Both of our games have been nothing but entertaining and the fans will travel to both locations.

I thought we were screwed all game on calls until the final two big calls. The no call on the PI and the "INT". That being said the ODU INT and return should've never happened. ODU held our RB and he couldn't get to the ball when it was in the air causing a deflection and an INT. We were up 14-7 and driving to go up 2 scores, instead the missed call and it's GAME ON.

I tried to be upset after this win, but I couldn't figure out how to get there.

- The whole Reid last year thing is definitely worth a conversation, I guess, but by the time he got in it would have been against everyone's 3's and 4's. Yeah he gets game time but does it really do that much for him? You put him in early last year and he's probably a shell of a player because of the spankings we got all year long.

- All of our QB's are young and we're just going to have to be ok, as Pirate fans, with struggling on offense this year. I really want to blame the OC, but I'm not sure that's the right place to point the finger. Herring is staring down Brown on 90% of pass plays. OC can call whatever he wants but it won't work if your QB stares down his target even though there are other receivers wide open. At this point, we really just need to work on Herring to make sure he understands that all he has to do is not lose the game. Be smart, keep it simple, and don't do dumb things.

- Ahlers is the QB of the future, that's why he's getting all these reps. They are putting him in because he can play, sure, but he will be QB1 in '19. That's why he goes in over Ifedi. Clearly there is something about Ifedi that keeps the coaches from putting him in. I don't know what it is, but if they aren't putting him in it's because they are afraid he will cost us a game. Herring has cost us two games, so that says a lot about the confidence in Ifedi.

- After USF, a lot of people were screaming to give Ahlers a shot at being the full time QB. Now we know why he's not. He's going to be good, he just isn't there yet in the passing game.

- We have a defense and they will keep us in pretty much every game this year. UCF will probably put up some points, but that's what they do. Otherwise, if we can get Herring to limit mistakes, this defense could very well get us to 5-6 wins.

All in all, I am very pleased with the outcome of this game. This ODU team would not have been 1-3 coming in to the game had LaRussa been the starter all year. Last year's Pirate team would have rolled over and died after the first interception and probably would have lost the game by 2+ touchdowns. This team kept fighting and figured out a way to win. I just can't be sad about it.

Ahlers is the QB of the future, but isn't ready to play QB right now. The wildcat package is great, but we can't use it consistently. He can't toss it, and almost got picked off in his limited pass attempts (was lucky the defender dropped it).

He also doesn't have much game awareness yet. He throws a 2-yard pass on 3rd and 9, forgets to call time-out after a rush with seconds left in the half...

He's the QB of the future, but needs time to cook. We have two guys in front of him with more experience.
