Exactly the stuff that set off this lone gunman.

congrats A.E. - you are part of the problem.

Wait... the problem is that liberals are calling out right wing rhetoric when it comes to immigration/minorities (and not the rhetoric itself)? Is that what you think set off the gunman?

Nope, but I am not surprised you want to see it that way.

It the the people on the left gloating publicly that immigration and Hispanic population growth will turn Texas blue who run the risk of setting off the nuttiest nuts on the right. Not a thing to do with right wing rhetoric.

I have heard the Dayton shooter was a self-described leftist and Elizabeth Warren supporter. If true, then we have competing ideologies leading to the same violence. Might make it tough to make it a one-sided thing.

Also... your use of the term "lone gunman" may not be entirely apt. When I think of that phrase it's more to describe a shooter whose motivations are entirely his own? It seems like the El Paso shooter was part of a network of white supremacists who goad each other online into action?

https://www.huffpost.com/entry/what-to-k...b57fce642b

Maybe it's semantics but I think of a "lone gunman" more like the Las Vegas shooter whose motivations are more opaque.

But yes... there was only one shooter in El Paso and maybe that's all you meant by the phrase. I apologize if I'm reading more into it than you meant.

I don't think right wing rhetoric sets off ALL mass shooters. I think it contributes to some of these recent ones, though. Quite a bit more so than liberals saying that Texas is going to turn blue.

Yeah... I've never said that all mass shooters are right wingers (have you heard anybody make that claim?). All sorts of people snap and way too many of these people have weapons capable of high carnage readily available.

OTOH... the El Paso shooter made his motivations crystal clear.

Yes, I have heard that claim. Not from you, of course. Also heard that all the shooters are white males.

The rhetoric on those websites might prime the pump, but the actual trigger may well come from a simple statement by a person of other convictions. Hundreds, maybe thousands post on those websites. If one goes wacko now and then, it fits the definition of lone gunman. Were there support troops in El Paso? Was there a small army doing the shooting? How many cars did they travel to EP in? It's not a vast, right-wing conspiracy.

Same could be said of the Dayton guy. Lots of hate on left wing sites. Hate towards conservatives, Republicans, and Trump. Maybe a right-winger said something to set him off, after the leftist sites set him up. Doesn't mean it was a vast left-wing conspiracy.

Damn, now the left is debating the definition of "one". Is that what they call fuzzy math?

What is the difference between a weapon capable of mass carnage and my deer rifle? My god you love those emotionally loaded terms for something commonplace. A+ on the rhetoric.

Do you call automobiles weapons of mass carnage as well? I would hope so given your pattern.

I guess using that logic the guy that pummeled Rand Paul was not a "lone assailant".

Nor was the gut that gunned down the Republican Congressional baseball team a "lone gunman" either.

Sound right? Or is the special rhetorical flourish reserved to one 'type'?

Actually "lone xxxx" does sound apt. Unless you use the trick to say that anyone incited to any action by any iota of an outside force is not.

The bolt action?

I’ve only ever hunted using bolt action rifles - no semi-automatics - but that could just have been my father’s preference in hunting rifle. The only semi-automatic rifle we used was a .22 for target practice or going after small rodents like armadillos.

Do you really think all deer rifles are bolt action? Just because that is the way you have hunted doesnt make it all universally inclusive, does it?

By the way my deer rifle is also used for feral hog. Kind of fing stupid to run across an enraged 400 lb sow with a bolt action. Maybe that is just me. Or javelinas in the brush.

Javelinas and 400 lb pissed off momma hugs are a tad different than field mice, one would surmise.

Are you so self-involved that you think all hunting is bolt action? Lolz.....

You are honestly suggesting that your personal interpretation of one party’s policy position (the Dem Party is not actually advocating for open, unchecked, immigration no matter how frequently you say they are) influenced someone to commit mass murder, as opposed to a highly visible public figure talking about a “invasion” from the southern border, which the murderer echoed in his manifesto?

Really?

Really?

Just making a comment as your snarky as **** posit. Bummer you dont notice that.

What do *you* call the rapid escalation of the human tide of illegal immigration that has been hitting the borders? 'Invasion' seems apropos. Not in Lad-world.

Best to use that designation as motivation for mass murder. Forgot, always is Orange Man Bad. I forgot the Lad mantra of the world and everything. I know we have gotten to full Lad OMB when you can tie in the concept of Christmas as the fault of OMB. You need to try that kneejerk exercise a bit better to pull that level off.

leftist Warren supporter

Yeah... I've never said that all mass shooters are right wingers (have you heard anybody make that claim?). All sorts of people snap and way too many of these people have weapons capable of high carnage readily available.

OTOH... the El Paso shooter made his motivations crystal clear.

What is the difference between a weapon capable of mass carnage and my deer rifle? My god you love those emotionally loaded terms for something commonplace. A+ on the rhetoric.

Do you call automobiles weapons of mass carnage as well? I would hope so given your pattern.

By the way the deer rifle is used for feral hog.

Lolz.....

Triggered this morning, I see. Maybe you should give us a heads up when you haven’t had coffee and you’re feeling snowflakey.

Was mainly adding my hunting experience, which never relied on semi-automatics. Your conversation focused on using semi-autos for deer hunting, when that isn’t the only type of rifle that can be used. So I pointed out that the rate of fire could be different if you use a bolt-action rifle for deer hunting.

My dad did a few bear hunts in the article circle with a bolt action - so you can definitely go after large, potentially aggressive game without a semi-automatic. But semi-automatic rifles are definitely more useful when dealing with feral hog control in Texas given their size down here and the sheer number of them. I feel like, if we wanted to more tightly control semi-automatic rifles you could easily provide a way for people who needed them for their livelihood or protection of property to go through some extra vetting/training to allow them to purchase a semi-automatic rifle. There is no question that the average Joe can do more damage with a semi-automatic rifle as compared to a bolt-action.

You’re right that it could have been thousands of posts that helped twist this man’s mind.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguar...t-invasion

Or maybe it was the constant fking love for 'open borders' by a whole swath of people?

You are honestly suggesting that your personal interpretation of one party’s policy position (the Dem Party is not actually advocating for open, unchecked, immigration no matter how frequently you say they are) influenced someone to commit mass murder, as opposed to a highly visible public figure talking about a “invasion” from the southern border, which the murderer echoed in his manifesto?

Really?

I guess by that logic Bernie is the cause of Hodgkinson. Glad you cleared that one up for us son.

Yes, that absolutely changes the calculus. Your experience and soley your experience. Got it. You are the fking master of the world.

I am pointing out that semis are used quite fking often, probably more than bolties. But your position changes all that magically.

Why dont you go home, write a book report for us all, then come back and tell us some more about that experience.

When did I suggest that either rifle type was used more often? Maybe respond to what I say, not what you think I mean.

Funny that. My comment was on *my* deer rifle. What was your pipsqueak about bolt action on? Obviously not mine, nor the other I have.

Let me be more general -- the comment *can* be taken as a comment on the, oh, 20-25 million of AK-like or AR-style guns out there; or the perhaps 50-75 million or so semi-autos chambered at .223 or above.

But yet *your* return comment is directed to *your* use of another style.

But your retort is that 'perhaps [I] should respond to what [you] say[.]' That is quite rich there, lad.

No, it was directed right at your comment that didn’t specify what type of hunting rifle you used for deer. You asked what the difference between these “military weapons” (or whatever term was used) and your deer rifle was. And since I didn’t know what type of rifle you used was, I asked if it was the bolt action (hence the question mark...).

I based that question off of my experience with deer hunting, where only a bolt action rifle was used. You then flew off to angry Tanq land for some reason. Good debate this morning - very productive!

I guess you are unclear that there are 70 million or so semi-auto .223+ or larger semi-auto rifles out there.

Or that there are about 25 million AK or AR styled deer rifles (actually used as deer rifles, mind you) in the US.

Quote:I based that question off of my experience with deer hunting, where only a bolt action rifle was used. You then flew off to angry Tanq land for some reason. Good debate this morning - very productive!

It would seem quite nonsensical to ask that question if a bolt-action were actually the issue, after everything that has been said around here. Wouldnt it? I guess that would *never* cross your mind. Good grief.
