It would be the same as Appy State calling the beating of UTEP at home a solid win.

NT was a 4 point favorite and had lost three straight games to the ponies. At the end of the third quarter SMU had one first down and 33 total yards before NT's subs took over.

SMU maybe the best team that a CUSA team beat in week 1. CUSA teams' victories over other FBS members were La Tech over S. Alabama by 4 points and Marshall over Miami Ohio by 7. Marshall was favored by 15 and La Tech by 10.5.

So it is not like App. St. beating UTEP at home.

Epic Applause

Points for you!

I think some on this board forget SMU is a middle of the pack AAC bowl program. SMU has not been a bottom feeder in the AAC. We just made them look like they are.

La Tech is not impressed by a W over the Ponies - we have been doing it for years

SMU is horrible, slow, weak, and their QB is puny like Fine but Fine can actually throw

After the Bowl last year, 42-3 first half, I ask how in the world did North Texas lose to SMU?

North Texas did what was expected and beat a terrible SMU team. Sonny Dykes can recruit talent, so SMU will be better.

IMO Marshall away win over Miami was a solid win, more so than UNT win over SMU

LA Tech beat a much different/weaker SMU team then the one that finished the regular season 7-5, and beat North Texas in 2017. SMU's great receivers were focused on the NFL draft. Morris had left with most of his staff. Dykes had a very short time to game plan for the bowl. SMU's players were mad Dykes got hired over their OC. SMU had a grad assistant for an offensive coordinator during the bowl. LA Tech beat an SMU team in disarray.

Fine may be slight of build, but he certainly isn't puny. Mason may be undersized, but he more then makes up for it in toughness, heart, intelligence, accuracy, and work ethic. Find me another 185 pound QB in the FBS that can throw for 400+ yards and 3 TD's in an FBS game, and bench 300+ pounds.

And SMU probably will be worse this year. They've not had a winning regular season since joining the AAC.

Right, it doesn't change the point that UNT beat up on a perennial cellar-dweller of the AAC. Congratulations. If puffing your chest out about beating SMU, well, whatever blows your skirt up.

Recognize this: Just amazing. Either the "Green" in Mean Green stands for some serious doobage, or you just don't do research.

So, SMU has not been a bottom-feeder in the AAC? really? Well, let's just look at that, shall we?

Since SMU joined the AAC in 2013:

2013 5-7
2014 1-11
2015 2-10
2016 5-7
2017 7-6 and getting blasted by LA Tech in their bowl

So, if 20-41 is middle of the road for you, then, just wow. SMU will be lucky to get to a bowl."

You might want to remember your own posts. This quote seems to indicate that you think prior records are pertinent.

You might want to remember why people are bringing up the past: Because you and Side Show constantly try to convince us of how good SMU has been. Oh, and another thing... I’ll bet you’re not gonna use that Massey rating to try to prove anything in about four or five weeks.

Because they have not been the worst in the AAC...

2013 5-7 SMU finished 5th out of 10 AAC teams
2014 1-11 The only season SMU finished dead last
2015 2-10 Finished 11th out of 12 AAC teams
2016 5-7 Finshed 8th out of 12 AAC teams
2017 7-6 Finished tied for 5th out of 12 AAC teams

While not championship caliber seasons, SMU has only finished last once since 2013, and they have been trending up since then. In fact, UCONN has been the worst team in the AAC since 2013. Posting a record of 17-44 in that time span.

In Week 1, ECU and Temple both lost to FCS teams... So SMU doesn't seem to be the bottom feeder this season either. But, you can think whatever you want.

Ok, so your definition of middle of the road is not finishing last? Got it!

In three of the five season their record ranked 5th or 8th in the conference. That's around the middle more then half of the time. Just sayin'.

Alright, Man. We're arguing over the tallest midget anyway. Even if whatever poll put Marshall at the top of the conference at this point in the season, I wouldn't care - there's too much football yet to be played, so we'll see how things pan out.

I seriously doubt SMU was less talented than the bowl team we played. Their 2 NFL WR's played most of the game - it's very rare when a G5 has 2 - we know how that goes at Tech too.

UNT may very well be the best team in the west and beat Tech at home in a couple of weeks but the point most of us are trying to make is to hold off on calling your W last Saturday a great win over a solid FB team in SMU. All signs point to SMU being what they usually are and not very good.

It was an in-state rival. It meant something. Did any SMU fans show up? Doubt it. Glad they're no longer in C-USA.

Yes. SMU fans did show up. I was shocked too.

Here is a nice photo I saw on the AAC board. 04-cheers

RE: Power Rankings After Week 1
I'm not ready to bury FAU yet. Motor is a heck of a player and if he gets help from the rest of the team they can still win the conference.

I have no idea how good SMU is. I do know they out recruited us last year, and the year before that, and on and on. I also know they have the #1 recruiting class in the G5 right now and that we are fighting them for a lot of the same DFW recruits. I also know a lot of those kids were there on Saturday. So no matter what, smoking SMU is a really good thing for us now.

Does it mean much for the rest of they year? Who knows. Who knows anything yet?

RE: Power Rankings After Week 1
Have we really gotten to the point where we want to argue about whether SMU or Miami OH is a better win for the conference? Personally, I think Miami is a better team at home than SMU is on the road, but who really knows at this point. I was worried about the Miami game because they have a very good senior QB and had as many returning starters as we did, something we probably won't see again during the regular season. Plus it was a road game.

In other words, I'm happy with our victory as I'm sure UNT fans are with theirs. Either one of our opponents may have played their best, or worst, game of the year against us. That's why one game, even head to head, tells you very little.
