Drawing 57% of Doak's capacity would mean that they had 45,000 fans per game and from games I saw last year, that's simply not the case. They had lots of empty seats for sure but not 35,000 empties a game.
When I was at FSU, I was responsible for reporting attendance for all olympic sports. I was told to essentially guesstimate rather than count. If it was pretty obviously a handful, it wasn't a big deal, but I'm not going to stand there and count 600+ people.
And here's the thing. Everyone guesstimates to the high side. No one sees an approximate crowd of 1,000 and says, oh, I guess there are 300 people there. No. They will "guess" that there are 1,700 there.

RE: What your school claims in announced attendance is a complete lie
I'm not buying these numbers. The only game ECU had last year that was announced at 38k was BYU in the homecoming game. There were definitely more than 17k people there. More like 25-30k.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FiUcNphehVg
go to 4:19 and you can see part of the crowd. The student section is on the left and there were more earlier in the game. But you can clearly see there was definitely more than 17k in the stadium. Keep in mind this was also at the end of the game and the game was out of hand by this point.
I found a picture
Definitely more than 17k

RE: What your school claims in announced attendance is a complete lie
Greg Auman did report actual attendance. He just did it differently than Joey Knight. He didn't make a big deal out of it. You generally saw him tweet it the day after the game and rarely made the attendance a writing topic.
I am sure there are all kinds of reasons that Greg and Joey reported differently but I think one of the main one's is each one's perspective. Greg went to UF to study journalism. Joey went to Troy State.
From the perspective of a UF alum, covering USF attendance compared to UF....it isn't even the same animal. USF, FAU, UCF, FIU....from Greg's perspective...it is all the same. 20k, 30k, 40K...who cares. Plus he was the main USF beat writer for more of the Big East years when attendance wasn't an issue.
Joey probably feels USF is no better than Troy. So he personally enjoys pointing out the failings. You also have to wonder, since the Times took out the Tribune and newspapers are dying....if they are trying to get more influence and subscriptions in the central part of the state, thus the sudden interest in UCF as of late.

RE: What your school claims in announced attendance is a complete lie
College football needs a standardized method of counting attendance. IMO, attendance should be counted in two ways: 1. People in seats and fans on the field and 2. Tickets sold. Both figures add context. For example, last year hurricane related weather depressed actual attendance for one of Tiger games and yet tickets sold was a much higher amount.

it is standardized...everyone announces tickets sold/distributed. Except Navy it seems.

For that to be accurate, the 10k reported at the Memphis tropical storm game would mean that only 10k tickets were sold. I can't believe that the university would report 22k season tix sold when in reality only 10k were sold. Maybe some fudging somewhere but I don't think that much.

I couldn't get behind the paywall and won't mess with it at work. But I will deflect some of the praise for Navy - Navy's "announced" attendance was 34,950 (see NCAA attendance at http://www.ncaa.org/championships/statis...attendance ) and no single game last year was 28K. Maybe Chet realized where their story was going and in the moment he announced to them the scanned attendance.

Someone has clearly never seen a Memphis game nor has the WSJ. 21k is a ludicrous number and every Memphis fan here will tell you that.

See, you have to understand that there are MANY people inside the stadium that did not get their ticket scanned. All the band students? Not one of them gets scanned. Then there is the incompetence of the SUB-CONTRACTED stadium staff who DO NOT CARE about their job being done correctly. See, we are in a municipal stadium. We suffer from not being about to control certain aspects of gameday. But I can assure you. If we report a crowd of 45,000 this Saturday, you can bet the house that's pretty close to being accurate. The number of tickets scanned is a hard number. But it is not the truth.

how can it be accurate if they aren't scanning tickets? Isn't it an estimate at that point? Im sure Memphis is closer to actual than 54% but for years we've been hearing that Memphis only announces actual butts in seats but now we know thats not true, and perhaps pretty far from the truth.

All you have to do is watch the Memphis game saturday to see how fictional 54% and 21k is or better yet watch any of our youtube games. If we are fudging numbers, its by a couple thousand and not tens of thousands.

It may be just be an estimate, but it is nearly always near the assumed actual. Our rain game with Tulane has 17k announced and it honestly looks like 17k. Our game with ECU was 41k announced and it looked just like 41k. Although Memphis fans have a better idea of attendance than fans at home since the home side usually is filled to the brim while the visitor is a sun-scorched wasteland where the TV camera points and only the bravest go.

USF - 71% (31K announced, 22K actual)
Memphis - 54% (38K announced, 21K actual -- LOL)
EZU - 48% (38K announced, 17K actual -- wtf??)
Houston - 66% (28K announced, 18K actual)
Uconn - 70% (20K announced, 14K actual)
Navy - 100% (28K announced, 28K actual)
Cinci 54% (28K announced, 15K actual)
The rest weren't listed in the database. Embarrassing numbers if true but I think they must have made some mistakes or inconsistencies somewhere. Doesn't seem this bad when I watch on TV.
So if the other UCF fan doesn’t show up you stand at 50%.
