All the PC crap is because they are scared of being sued. Show them that they can get sued for going too far the other direction too.

WTH ... "Sue them sue them all".....

That is NOT the answer and that is part of the problem. You basically enable those who look to make a buck off of stuff like this.

That teacher does need consequences and so does the School IF they do not do something about this. I give a lot of credit to that Mother, she didn't go off the rails, she went to the school explained that the definition of the word ma'am is of respect. That teacher owes that kid an apology and deserves some kind of punishment but nobody should be getting rich off of this.

Sorry, your attitude is laudable, but this is why our education system keeps drifting one way.

The teacher does need consequences and so does the school. But unless someone is going to force the issue there will be a mild slap of the wrist, if that. The school knows that they are going to get sued in a heartbeat off they are not PC enough. So they are always going to err on one side. Let them know there are adverse consequences for being too damned PC as well, if you want to change their course.

Let me preface this by saying this is a stupid situation overall, and the teacher is WAY out of line for threatening him, and should be reprimanded/suspended for that action alone.

However, he was punished by writing the word over & over because he disobeyed the teacher.
He called her 'ma'am,' she asked him to stop, and he didn't.

"Respect" also means following someone's wishes regarding what they're called, not ignoring them.

Complete Horseshit! Ma'am is a sign of respect for a woman. If a teacher did this to my daughter I'd have her head on a spike. S**** what she wants to be called! You look like you have girl parts, you get called ma'am. Look like you have boy parts, you get called sir. The state doesn't get to teach my child respect or morality, period.

Agreed.

Calling someone "sir" or "ma'am" is a routine. It can be respectful, but in and of itself it's not actual respect.

Respect is listening to someone's words and taking them into account before speaking to them. Ignoring someone's repeated request over what to be called is very disrespectful.

That's why I don't really mind when people want to be called something different from their birth name. Transgenderism shows horrible morals and is one of the more disturbing mental illnesses, but I'll still show them respect and call them the name they want to go by. Because even if they're not bound by the laws of civility, I am.

It's a sign of respect, until said person doesn't want to be called that. GENERALLY anytime a woman says something about being called ma'am the response is, "Oh, don't call me that - it makes me feel old. Call me ____." And RESPECTFUL people call them by the name they wish.

The kid has a (good) habit of using manners. But when you continue to do something the teacher tells you not to do, you're punished for it. It is what it is.

That in NO WAY excuses her behavior regarding threatening to throw something at him.

Roll your eyes all you want, but if someone doesn't want to be called something, whether it's a sign of respect or not, that's their call.

Likewise, it's a teacher's reponsibility to correct, & sometimes punish kids when they aren't following directions.

I get this doesn't fall under what would typically be punishable, but instructions are instructions. If you are teaching your kid to be respectful, you have to teach them to also be respectful of others when they request that you don't use that terminology with them.
