North Carolina mom in 'disbelief' after son, 10, punished for calling teacher 'ma'am'
Quote:
The mother of a 10-year-old boy in North Carolina is outraged that her son was recently punished for calling his fifth grade teacher "ma’am.”
“I was in disbelief,” Teretha Wilson, the boy’s mother, told Fox News on Saturday.
Wilson noticed her son, Tamarion, was not himself when she picked him up from the bus stop earlier this week.
“I asked him what was wrong, and he told me he got in trouble for saying 'ma’am' to a teacher. I was confused,” she said.
Inquiring further, Wilson asked her son to give more detail about the incident. That’s when the fifth-grader at North East Carolina Preparatory School in Tarboro, North Carolina, pulled out a piece of lined paper with the word ma’am written dozens of times.
Wilson was shocked, especially when Tamarion told her that his teacher, who has not been formally identified, told him that he was required to return the piece of paper with a parent’s signature.
The young boy also claimed that the teacher threatened to throw something at him during the incident, his mother said.
“He was disappointed because he felt like he had done something wrong,” she said.
The next afternoon, Wilson went to the school to meet with Tamarion’s teacher and the school's principal. With her she brought a separate piece of paper on which her son had written the definition of ma’am. (According to the Oxford Dictionaries, ma’am is defined as “a term of respectful or polite address used for a woman”).
Wilson claims Tamarion’s teacher told her that her son “was getting on her nerve when he called her ma’am" but “couldn’t give me a reason of why that was bad.” The teacher also claimed Tamarion knew that she wasn’t serious when she allegedly threatened to throw something at him, Wilson said.
Tamarion has been placed in a different teacher’s class since the incident occured.
In a statement to ABC 11, an official with the school called the situation a “personnel matter,” which “has been handled appropriately by the K-7 principal.”
Still, Wilson said she plans to call the school board on Monday to see “if they’re really going to handle it,” though she did not elaborate on what this would entail.
“This is about my child being respectful, then threatened to be hit with something. This isn’t about racism, as some people have made it out to be,” Wilson said, referring to some of the comments on a family member’s Facebook post where she detailed the incident.
Moving forward, Wilson said she has encouraged her son to “always be respectful to [his] elders even if they don’t want to be called ma’am," she said.
“Is this what happens from raising your child in a good way?” she asked.

My boss is a 60+ year old hardcore feminist. She gets incredibly angry everytime I use ma'am with her. Being that it was engrained into my vocabulary at age 3 to use sir or ma'am, she gets angry a lot

You shouldn't disparage cats that way. They can't help who adopts them.
That said, while I was working on a masters a group of students moving between buildings got caught in a rainstorm and as I dashed up half a dozen steps the woman behind me was not only getting soaked but was holding her load of books with both hands, so I held the door for her to which she turned around once inside and proclaimed that I was a chauvinist pig for holding the door for a capable woman. I merely replied, "I didn't notice you were a woman. I just thought you were a human being getting soaked who had both hands full. Forgive me for not noticing that you were also hostile and ignorant!"

Cats actually do the adopting, but that's for another thread.
In response to what solohawks had to say above, I'm the same. And as a kid, if we failed to address or elders properly, we got whacked.
My favorite ma'am story. My first day as a freshman in high school they send me over the gym to sign up for PE. There were a number of young ladies taking information. I'd answer yes ma'am, no ma'am, and they'd giggle. It was only later that I realized they were students, seniors probably. They looked much older than I and were in a position of authority, so I followed my parents rules. Hated getting whacked.

As children my dad would repeat ma'am and sir until we said it. My sisters and I still have excellent manners because of this

This is the insane world we suddenly live in. Good is called evil and evil is called good.
Respectfulness is treated as disrespect. Disrespect is rewarded and lifted up as a righteous virtue.
About 2-3 years ago, I begin to find myself thinking more and more than the world was slipping into mass insanity. Make no mistake now, it has. Those who are not insane are practically deer in headlights things are happening so fast now. Beyond being shocked and pointing to the insanity, most simply don't know what to do or say.
Its coming in waves like a giant tsunami.
We've seen the groundwork being laid since the 1960's. What we have seen the last few years is mind-blowing.

There have been few times that my use of sir or maam was problematic. There were many times when my failure to use them was even more problematic. The only time now that I have issue with it is when I'm responding to what I think is a man or woman appropriately and it turns out I misapplied maam to a man or vice versa.

All the PC crap is because they are scared of being sued. Show them that they can get sued for going too far the other direction too.
I agree. In Tarboro NC?...I expect child learns to use these terms early on by their parents as respect for elders. WTH is going on? This needs to stop...NOW!!!

I once held the door for a 'random female' in NY... she aggressively stopped and said...
don't hold to door for me... THIS woman doesn't need your help....
to which I responded, I didn't hold the door because you're a woman... I held the door because I'm a gentleman.... I was still holding the door when a man brushed behind her through the open door, pushing her... and telling me 'thanks, man'.

If she gets upset over a child calling her ma'am and she's over 18 years of age, then she's in the wrong profession.

This isn't too far up the road from me. Fire the teacher. She obviously doesn't have the mental fortitude if a 5th grader can get on her nerves to the point she punishes him for being polite. At a minimum she should have to write "I'm sorry I over-reacted" at least a dozen times for each time she made him write "ma'am".
