Each school used its own scheduling philosophy when considering a game in Cincinnati as part of a home and home series. I don't expect a unilateral withdrawal.
Virginia Tech was also supposed to come to PBS.
I also recall the Purdue series being four games, which they later shaved to two.
At least Purdue and Illinois followed through, as especially OU did. But, problem with those two was scheduling in Nippert first. As Rag would indicate, those could well have been cut off too, under the circumstance of UC playing on the road first.
Even though slightly different, I'd put what Michigan did with the basketball series under the same category.

Yes, VT was supposed to be a home game. As I recall the "buyout" in that case was a seven figure payout to move the game to a "neutral site" in Washington, DC. Of course a big Bearcat victory on national TV in front of lots of VT faithful made that payday look pretty good all the way around.
Regarding Michigan, I had heard that UC would still get that home basketball game here so it may not be a dead issue. A football game with the Big Blue in PBS would certainly be a headliner and great revenue opportunity.

As I recall RFK Stadium paid UC $3.5M to move the game there. That’s too good of an opportunity for most schools to pass up.

The VT game wasn't bought out by VT. It was bought out by the Redskins for $4.2 million. I don't think that counts - the dollar figure was ridiculous, and while VT probably liked it they didn't provide any of the funds.

Yes, you're correct about the VT payment source. That puts it in a different category from the OSU buyout making the Buckeyes the only university to write UC a big check to move a game.

Compared to playing an FCS cupcake every year - I like this move. An easily driveable road trip game, and an opponent that might bring a few fans into Nippert (and encourage our fans to make noise.)
My real preference is more readily driveable P5 home and homes. Tough to make that happen. The list is not that long. (Pitt, WVU, Louserville, UK, Vandy, Illinois, Northwestern, Purdue, Indiana)
I realize that the AD is looking at revenue and likes to put Bearcat butts in Nippert. And they need to balance the schedule. Not necessarily an easy job.
You think not having any of those games on the schedule is for a lack of trying (we do have Pitt and Indiana on the future schedule)? A lot of those schools deliberately do not schedule us.
Northwestern, Vandy and Purdue are within arms length, and combined we've only played those schools 5 times in FB (2-Vandy, 3-Purdue) and another hand full of times combined in hoops in over 125 years -- if not for post season play we would have played them even less frequently.
UL and WVU definitely wants separation from us. I've heard multiple coaches say UC has reached out to them and been told no thanks.
UC 31 up 22 down one tie
