Memphis elected a white moderate democrat from east Memphis as mayor in Jim Strickland and Shelby County just elected a pragmatic democrat who attended Yale and teaches law at the UofM in Lee Harris.

no more King Willie running things.

Strickland ain't moderate

Jim is about as moderate of a guy as I've ever met.

Correct. I guess the folks who dislike Jim must want King Willie or AC back...

Middle of the night deals to sell a city park for $1000 aren't moderates. Moderates work within the system unlike Strickland. Now the city is paying the price for this from the state.

1) that sale was totally legal...

https://www.usnews.com/news/us/articles/...s-is-legal

2) the State took away money Memphis never planned on getting anyway...so no loss there.

Legal maybe but shady. Why the middle of the night crews to take down the statues?

I think there should be more open discussion of the sale of a public park especially if the opening bid is only $1000. I'd like to buy Galloway Golf course if it's only $1000.

All you have to do is look at the demographics of Memphis proper to understand the VAST majority wanted those statues down...when the Mayor/Council tried to act, they were blocked by the State...when Strickland tried to follow the rules, he was shot down by a committee back-loaded with Son's members.

I wish we would do away with the Memphis city government totally...the area should be governed by the Shelby County Mayor/Commission, with Shelby County Sheriffs and Fire Depts...this way the people in Germantown, Collierville, Bartlett, Millington, Lakeland, etc. get a say in the major issues that impact the greater Memphis area.

JMHO.

what you just defined is the smaller scale version of the 'burg......and I completely agree with incorporating a multi tiered council as outward growth becomes problematic.....

if one affects the other, it only makes sense to communicate in that fashion....

RE: The military parade will cost....
Obama's 2009 inauguration was estimated to cost $170 million, or $190 million today after factoring in inflation, and the federal government paid over $100 million just for security during the 2005 and 2009 inaugurations.

For comparison's sake: Cost of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Macy's doesn't release numbers about how much they spend the Thanksgiving Day Parade each year, but estimates put the average total cost for the event between $11.6 and $13.4 million.

Because its a better route than making a tremendous public spectacle out of a highly inflamed issue between two immovable sides... which could potentially end in violence.

The city has moved on and no violence resulted.

No; they aren't. The decisions have come down - what the city did was legal, and honestly, the most pragmatic solution to end the whole thing. Had it dragged out like the TN historical commission wanted, it would have been much, much worse.

Memphis gets treated like a 'red-headed stepchild' by the rest of the state anyway; so any fallout in the future from this will be no different than if they had kowtowed to the Sons of Confederate Vets-led TN historical commission. I'm proud that our city finally had the balls to stand up and say enough was enough.

$80M is small time. It needs to be at least a $1B parade.

RE: The military parade will cost....
A big difference between France and the US is that I don't think they have a big problem of having country hating liberals there like we do or that they hate their president. Here we have millions of sick, deranged Liberals with TDS who will consider it a victory if they can stop the president in anything.

But, after all that I'm glad that it won't be put on. We can use that money some place else. I know that that slime ball senator who said it could be used for veterans is right even though I don't think he's that worried about us because he sure didn't care how the Oblunder administration treated the vets so why is he now so enamored of us...politics.
