If I was Trump I'd tweet this: Yes, it's retaliation for posing a threat to the national security of this country and because it is completely within my purview to remove any clearance from any individual who reports to the executive office.".

I'm not sure why anyone no longer in a former job that required a security clearance would still have that security clearance after leaving the job. Seems logical to me for that clearance to be revoked, no matter the politics, etc.

Here is a little story about ole' Shep:

Back in the early 90's he was with the local CBS affiliate down here in Orlando. One night, he got busted for trying to solicit an undercover male prostitute. The rival stations showed it but the CBS station didn't. Made the paper and people snickered. He was suspended for a few days and then demoted from the weekend desk back to being a grunt cub reporter.

If the end result of this partisan tit-for-tat is removing security clearances for ex-government employees, then we are all winners.

They keep them because these people are often used as resources by future administrations. Now, they can't be without getting the clearance issued again.

Nonsense. Unless current or future administrations use these guys as a resource, having the clearance is next to meaningless. They're no longer employees, so if they're not being used for something, they aren't seeing anything requiring a clearance. So removing it can only hamper things in the future.

No, sorry. There has been a fair amount written about how ex-government employees who retain their security clearances leverage that clearance into lucrative private sector contracts.
