RE: 2018 Ohio Special Election Results
LOL. Congrats to Balderson on what will be (after provisionals) a 1200 vote or so victory in a CD that has no ancestral Dem heritage and where DJT won by 11 percent last time and where he had a 4 to 1 spending advantage. Balderson gets to go to DC for a couple of months, while O'Conner gets to campaign full time for the rematch in November. Wonder if the RNC is going to pump 4 to 1 cash into this seat for the next 3 months.

Looks like the election showed a few things

1) Rural/Exurban Republicans stayed with the GOP
2) Urban/Suburban voters broke heavily for the Dems
3) Dem turnout is up relative to the GOP and up significantly

Here are the people who are happy.

1) Balderson (he's more relieved more than anything else)
2) GOP Reps in rural/exurban districts.

Here are the people who are not happy

1) O'Conner

Here are the people who are scared right now

1) Mary Taylor (R - Governor nominee). She can't get 50 percent out of CD12 and win election.
2) Every GOP Congressman in Ohio who needs gerrymandering to hold onto their seats post 2020.

The GOP candidates running in open seats with higher urban percentages than CD 12.
The GOP incumbents running in districts against credible challenges where the electorate is highly educated
GOP candidates where Trump won by less than 11 percentage points.

There are about 70 or so of those districts.
---

Winning is better than losing, duh. I suppose congratulations are in order to the GOP for winning what now passes for a 'jump ball' district.

50.2% for the Republican, 49.3% for the Democrat. 100% of the vote in.

Another "moral" victory for the Democrats. They pour a ton of money and effort in and still fall short. Just like Georgia 6th except that in Georgia, Handel outperformed Trump.

Progressives will use it as a reason to purge mere liberals from the party tickets.

And the Green Party continues to grow as a result. I like that pun. I ought to put it on a bumper sticker and sell it to the hippies at the co-op down the road, lol...

I think I've had enough fun on a thread for the eve......

Deplorables won with their "B" team tonight. Lets see what happens when we put the starters in.

However, since Russia obviously gave the Republicans yet another election victory, you're 100% supporting immediate Voter ID implementation, right?!?!? Lol.

Translation: “if we’re 50-49 in a 66-34 district... I feel pretty good about taking back the House in 2018.”

GOP had a very low turnout. Kind of like when an SEC plays their B squad against a 1-AA team and still wins by 10.

The better football parallel for the Ohio 12th would be a team of 11 players taking on a team of 4... with the team of 11 pulling out a 1 pt win in the final minute of the game.

Impressive indeed. We'll see how things turn out when the two teams play in a district a little more balanced.

That was definitely true for a long time going back to the 1970s, IMHO.

But since looking very closely at the 2016 returns, I honestly have begun to wonder if that’s still true anymore. That may have been a random tangent based on the individual candidates involved, and I’d want to see more data from future elections, in any case. But I think the base Libertarian constituency may be changing, in a way that hurts D’s more than R’s. We shall see.

Gary Johnson has set the Libertarian Party back 10 years IMHO. He was dogsh!t as a candidate. He may have solid ideas; however, if you cannot effectively sell yourself as anything other than a train wreck...

And he had that guy from SOAP as his running mate.

Whatever makes you feel better Tom. I can only imagine your post had the DEM won. I could care less about margin of victory. Some districts are true battlegrounds and it will be close regardless. Onward and upward MAGA/KEEP AMERICA GREAT!

More like a 53-42 district. But point taken... sort of.

Is that really what happened in OH-12, though?

I guess the democrats are going to have to go back to a tried and true winning strategy. Time to forge some more yearbooks.

And they've basically given up on Georgia 6th. If they can't win one of these special elections with all that effort, they're toast in November (in this particular district) when they have to run in a lot of districts.

This doesn't really tell us much about the balance in the House in November except that Democrats keep making poor choices of spending their money and time. They will probably spend a ton of money and time on the Georgia governor's race and Texas Senate race and get stomped in both. The Democratic party leaders live in an echo chamber. That's very good for Republicans.

When I decided to go to Ohio for Troy Balderson, he was down in early voting 64 to 36. That was not good. After my speech on Saturday night, there was a big turn for the better. Now Troy wins a great victory during a very tough time of the year for voting. He will win BIG in Nov.
