No, but it would be helpful if your "3-star recruits" had offers from someone other than the Denton County Barber & Cosmetology School.
Correcting your false statements is becoming like a second job.
Look. Almost half (6 of 14) of UNT's recruits hold offers from P5 programs (Syracuse, Indiana, Virginia, Nebraska, Kansas, West Virginia, Louisville, Oregon State, Texas Tech, Maryland, and Northwestern). 43% of UNT's recruits hold offers from P5 programs.
Only 2 of LA Tech's 6 recruits have offer from P5 programs (Miss State, Rutgers, Syracuse, and TCU). Only 33% of LA Tech's recruits hold P5 offers.
Right now, you really have no room to question the caliber of recruit North Texas is hauling in.

(07-24-2018 01:37 AM)XYZ Wrote: I agree to a point. In football it seems more often than not, the teams with the best recruiting classes win (Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, Georgia, etc..). In basketball, teams full of 5 star players lose to well-coached “mid-major” level teams all the time. Teams like the Princeton’s of the past, Gonzagas, Butlers, Wichita State of recent years, MTSU the past two years, George Mason of the past (can go on and on).
Villanova won two of the past three championships and rarely ever has a Top 25 basketball class (they usually average around #40 and middle of the Big East). Wisconsin is another team that, other than last year, has been an elite level team in bball lately but have had recruiting classes in the #50-#100 range typically.
I think college bball was shown recently to have the most wins by underdogs than college football and baseball. A good coach with a good system, experienced players, and that can develop players usually beats a team with 5 star talent.
If you have a coach that understands how to develop players then for the most part all you need to do is find those talented enough that fit the system you run. Jay Wright and Dan D'Antoni are two of the best that fit this mold. As a matter of speaking when Dan was an asst under Mike at PHO, NYK and LAL, that was Dan's job. He was in charge of developing players. Some of those he developed were Barbarosa, Marrion, Stoudemire, Linn and others.
At times in the NCAAs Wright would have 5 guards on the floor and not even worry about rebounding. Why, because he knew more times than not his 5 guards could spread the floor out and score over top or underneath the taller player.

I think the top 300-400 players are really evaluated. The rest is simply looking at who offers and the desire of recruiting sites to drive happy traffic. That's why they are increasing the number of 3 stars. Makes fans excited to go to the site and clicks are bucks for them.
To be honest, some of our top players have been former walk ons lately. Chase Hancock, pre-season all conference LB and Malik Gant, preseason Thorpe list, former walk ons. Kids develop at such different rates and have such a difference in coaching and strength training coming up that you never really know how they will develop in college. Four and five star busts are usually just kids that reach their full potential at 17-18 years old.
We've also had our share of never was 4 stars who for some reason or anther couldn't cut it on the field or had issues with the staff. Guys like Kendall Gant, Angelo Jean-Louis or AJ Leggett. In basketball Justin Coleman, Kareem Canty and Chris Thomas come to mind.

RE: Question on recruiting classes
Just as a passerby, I would think a player is better if he is getting drafted by the NFL compared to holding an offer from a P5 school. The difference is one player is good in high school, the other player is good in college. Obviously the one who proves himself in college is the better player, right? Carry on

You would think, but those undrafted North Texas players beat LA Tech and their drafter players last season.
And, this season's North Texas recruiting class is looking better then LA Tech's.

Everyone is quite impressed by UNT's 1-point win last season. It's all those other lopsided smashings that blow up your superiority theory.

2016 LA Tech 45 – UNT 24
2015 LA Tech 56 – UNT 13

I'm just giving an honest evaluation of where I believe things stand right now. We are no longer the program that gave up those lopsided victories, but you are free to think that if you wish. I hope your coach and players believe as you do. It will just make it easier to beat y'all in September.
You do realize in our history of playing each other LA Tech has won 9 games and North Texas has won 7. Also, since joining C-USA, LA Tech has won 3 and North Texas has won 2. It isn't like the Dawgs are dominating the series. If anyone has a "superiority theory" agenda it is you.
