Good find, thanks.

One thing I learned is Penny wants lounge upgrades and practice court “shooting guns” to bring the new facility up to NBA standards. I hope it will be done ASAP.

Lounge upgrades to a $20 Million building that is only a few month old. I'm sure that will go over well.

no problem

because it's an AP article, it is likely to be published in many newspapers and other outlets, not just as part of the USA Network as if it was written by Giannotto

always helps with recruiting

The $20 Million was spent for a coach that would have just as soon played and practiced in the Fieldhouse. Got to get his own style in there. Besides I am sure Penny made a sizable donation towards that 20M anyway. Still wish they could get the IPF up for football.

Red tape is my understanding. That whole facility will be covered by red tape.

It is great that not only does he get the PR but he is well-liked. When Cal was here, he generated plenty of PR but the national perception of him was so bad.

Cal had a pottymouth he didn't mind sharing with the National Teevee Audience.

A few mothers here on West Coast commented about that to me at the time. It was kind of hard to defend. lol

Penny's answers are genuine...no BS coachspeak--easy to feel the truth in what he says.

“I meet pressure head on,” Memphis’ newest coach said. “I mean I feel like I was born to do what I’m doing right now. I feel like I have a good enough staff and us as a crew and our team, I really love my team, and I feel like we can do whatever we really put our minds to that we can do. I don’t shy away from it. I know it’s there, but I’m ready for the challenge.”

For a coach who brought in an additional $4.5 Million in revenue at a cost of $1.3 Million in salary. I'm sure it will go over just fine.

Penny sees the big picture and by hiring him, the administration will see it too. Yes, that's some $$$ but at the same time things like this truly are an investment in success. When top players take visits it's things like this that help sway them.

Unless a direct source is identified with earmarked funding, I'm guessing this will be included in "phase 2" of basketball facilities funding. Behind the IPF.

But with the contacts (and money) of Hardaway, Miller, and Mitchell - they can probably line-up the funding.

I would imagine it would come down to what is the cost of said upgrades. But I also think it will be done regardless of the cost. With the potential of a new and vastly increased contract with Nike because of Penny, whatever he wants, within reason, he will get. Think Tubby would have gotten a Mercedes Sprinter recruiting van just after being hired? I own a fairly loaded Sprinter and I can say that the new Tiger van was $250K or even greater depending on the electronics/AV systems. With the way things are going how can you say "no we gotta hold off spending a few more $$$$."

I bet the full $$ impact when all is said and done will be closer to double that.
Nike contract redo,
Additional TV spots,
Likely NCAA tourny after a four year break,
More season tickets will be sold,
Ticket prices will go up,
Donations will go up even more,
Attendance will go up and we will be back to getting the full payout from the Grizz,
More logo sells,

............and then we will sign the 2019 class................

Wasn't it reported that Penny owned the van himself?

If it was over 200k, it was a ripoff. Unless extravagant electronics are included.
