True but a higher early season ranking would position the huskies into the top 25 if they beat Iowa and Utah.

He did about as well as one could expect from a true freshman who is not necessarily a great athlete or has a big arm. But he does have poise. Sort of a Zach Terrell type who will have to play smart and be accurate(which was an issue last season).

Childers was a redshirt freshman, not true freshman. The true freshman QB at WMU outplayed Childers and he had less starts than Childers when we played them. Generally, you would think a QB would get better over the course of the season but Childers got worse. Last 3 games were terrible.

Athletes don’t always progress in a linear manner. But his “better” early starts are just as much as a product of opponent: Kent st, Buffalo , Bowling Green as opposed to his last 3: CMU, WMU, Duke. Those first 3 teams defense’ rankings were 81, 71, 126. The last 3 were 55,49,21

He was probably petrified of throwing an interception.

I wouldn't be surprised if that was part of it. The strategy seems to be to have 3 lame plays and then punt instead of taking any chance of an interception.

I’m Ok with being a little overrated before start the of season. Makes the Iowa and Utah game that much more special. Wins against them could land is in the top 25 before MAC play starts. Nobody expects us to beat FSU as they will be stacked and hungry under Willie Taggart. They don’t do down years very often. Beat Iowa, Beat Utah, and play competitive against FSU is enough to garner a spot in the top 25. Like JoeNovak said....

Exactly. Some people think Childers is to blame for the war in Syria too. There are not many QBs right now that could have success with NIU's system, Childers did an admirable job given the circumstances.

I don't agree with that bolded point but I do actually agree with the rest of that.

Childers was not good by any means, but he was also not bad either. True or redshirt freshman, it makes no difference. He was still a freshman and was thrown into the mix when he was not expected to start at the beginning of the season.

Some of the people commenting on this must have selective memory because they seem to forget the terrible freshman and sophomore seasons that Harnish had before his breakout.

But hey, everyone should come right in and be studs like Lynch right!?

RE: USA Today rankings
Childers was fine(for a freshman). It has nothing to do with the system. It was more than likely simplified for a kid who had no experience or practice reps with the first string.

As mentioned, Harnish was not good his first year. Was that because of a bad system? We know he’s a great qb, so what was it then? Well duh, he was a just a freshman.

Harnish(8 games)
118/211(56%), 1528 yds, 8td-9int, qbr 121

Childers(9 games)
152/265(57%), 1674 yds, 16td-5int, qbr 127

It seems jaded to me to say this system is aweful(4th in the Mac with a freshman qb) or to say Childers sucks without qualifying that with the fact he’s a freshman. He’s inaccurate yes, but physical things can be worked out. I think he played mentally beyond what a freshman should be able to do, and that’s what has me supporting him.

I think Childers inaccuracy is a product of the system. I honestly do not think a QB can be successful in NIU's offense right now. Its just not possible.

I just showed you he was more successful and more accurate than Harnish given the same work load. So are you saying he's better than a Harnish or that Harnish was in an even worse system?

RE: USA Today rankings
I saw his spring "game" reps and he looked improved. Like an actual good college QB. Hope that works in actual game usage. But the way NIU plays the power conference teams is to not air it out. It may be week 3 until we see if he has improved or not.

For what is worth, he looked like the best QB on the roster.

So overall they both were bad, although one was an actual true freshman. I watched all the NIU games and Childers led a pretty inefficient offense and did not seem to get better with more experience. I hope a switch flips for him this year, he will be playing much tougher competition this season.

Nah, the NIU safety was out of position on that 3rd and long play where Iowa scored. 1 guy out of 11 in wrong spot. RB ran right by him for TD. If he had been there would have been 4th and long with little time on clock.

Harnish made the big leap between his Jr year. His freshman stats are comparable to Childers. Harnish had better yards/att, Childers had better(by far) TD/INT.

Many posters on this board are schizophrenic...I remember after the 2012 Iowa game many wanted Lynch benched and more than a few suggested DD coached to lose the game. 01-wingedeagle

Harnish was bad as a freshman. I don't remember him being too hot as a sophomore either. We need Childers to play better or we will have to watch teams just stack the box against us and our offense will be ineffective until we play bad MAC teams.

If I remember correctly, Harnish nearly beat MN in his 1st collegiate start I believe. The D let him down.

In this system , I just don't think dramatic improvement in the QB position is something that is realistic. The problem runs much much deeper than QB. QBs are not even given a chance to succeed right now

If that's the case, could you explain this to me? From 2000-2011, NIU starting QB's composite completion percentage was 58% and composite QBR was 133. From 2012-2017, the starting QB's completion percentage was 60% and QBR 135. The qbs in this system have performed slightly better in the last 6 seasons than in the ones in the previous 12.

and there's this...the starting QB rush yards from 2000-2011 total 2,834. From 2012-2017 the total is 6,776(4,343 is Lynch. Still 2,400+ from Hare, Maddie, Childers)

So tell me again how bad this system is for QB performance?

When exactly did that start? Obviously Harnish and Lynch succeeded. Hare seemed to be doing alright, and Maddie did fairly well for not having played most of his career.

Having said that, I wouldn't be surprised if all of our QBs get gun-shy for fear of turning the ball over, since that appears to be an unforgivable error.

There is certainly a paralysis that is increasing with each year that passes in the conservative nature of this offense. NIU's has had a string of playmakers on offense including TLL, D. Brown, A Turner, KG that have helped to mitigate the conservativeness. This year though, I just worry when you combine a RC offense with few if any playmakers, it could spell some very very ugly football.
